Job summary

AECOM is seeking ambitious Cables System Design Engineers to contribute to HV/EHV transmission projects across the UK. You will engage in feasibility, detailed design, installation supervision and commissioning for onshore infrastructure, working with T&D clients globally and within National Grid upgrade programs.

Role involves collaborating with civil, structural, substation and OHL teams to deliver integrated solutions using industry standards and advanced tools.

Qualifications

• Electrical Engineering degree or HNC in Electrical Engineering/Power Systems.
• FEED experience essential for HV/EHV transmission projects.
• Experience in regulated, quality environments, ideally with National Grid.

Responsibilities

• Deliver full lifecycle cable engineering packages from feasibility to commissioning.
• Review HV cable system designs including route development, burial risk, thermal and EMI analyses.
• Conduct cable rating studies: ampacity, short circuit, thermal stability and EMI analysis.
• Perform cable pulling, jointing, cleating and installation feasibility studies.
• Collaborate with civil, structural, substations and OHL teams to deliver integrated solutions.

We are currently growing our Cables Design team and are looking to hire ambitious Cables System Design Engineers, who are ready to take their career to the next level.

As part of this exciting role, youll get the chance to work on innovative and varied projects throughout the entire lifecycle - from feasibility and concept through to detailed design, installation supervision, and commissioning of onshore infrastructure. Youll work across multiple voltage levels working with clients including Transmission System Operators, Distribution Network Operators, and private developers worldwide. This includes working directly on National Grids Great Grid Upgrade.

Heres what you will do:

• Contribute to the delivery of full lifecycle cable engineering packages from feasibility studies and concept design through to detailed design, installation support, and commissioning.
• Support with the review complex HV cable system designs, including route development, burial risk assessments, thermal, electromagnetic, and mechanical calculations.
• Undertake cable rating and system studies including ampacity, short circuit forces, thermal stability, and electromagnetic interference analysis.
• Carry out cable pulling, jointing, cleating, and installation feasibility studies.
• Gain exposure to civil, structural, substation and OHL teams to ensure fully integrated solutions.
• Support senior members of the team with third-party inspections and support FAT/SAT, installation, and commissioning activities.
• Support the interface activity with manufacturers, suppliers, and contractors to verify compliance with IEC, CIGR, National Grid TPs, and other international standards.

Qualifications

Ready to push the limits of whats possible?

Heres what were looking for:

• Ideally, youll have and Electrical Engineering Degree or at minimum are HNC qualified in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related discipline.
• Some experience in Cable System Design Engineering for HV/EHV transmission and distribution projects. FEED experience is essential.
• Some experience in regulated, quality-assured environments, preferably with National Grid experience.
• A basic understanding of:
• Onshore cable routing
• Cable pulling and mechanical forces
• Cable burial risk assessments and protection strategies
• Electromagnetic, thermal, and stability analysis
• Cable cleating and short circuit restrain
• A basic knowledge of national and international standards, including IEC, CIGR, and NG-TPs.
• Ideally experience with:
• Cable manufacturing and testing
• Third-party inspection and verification
• Experience with tools such as CYMCAP, WinCable, AutoCAD, Revit, GIS, and mechanical simulation tools.
