We are representing a well-established organisation seeking an experienced Buyer to manage the procurement of materials, plant, and subcontract services across a diverse portfolio of construction and property-related projects.

This role is ideal for a commercially astute professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and can confidently collaborate across multiple departments to ensure the smooth running of procurement operations.

Role Overview:

As a Buyer, you will play a critical role in ensuring that all purchasing activities are delivered in a timely, cost-effective, and quality-driven manner. You will be responsible for sourcing suppliers, managing purchase orders, negotiating commercial terms, and coordinating with operational teams to ensure seamless delivery of goods and services to project sites.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Source and procure construction materials, plant hire, and subcontractor services in line with individual project requirements, budget constraints, and timescales.
  • Liaise daily with project managers, site managers, estimators, and contract managers to understand site needs and timelines.
  • Prepare and issue purchase orders using internal procurement systems, ensuring accuracy of quantities, specifications, and delivery instructions.
  • Monitor delivery schedules and actively follow up with suppliers to prevent delays or supply chain disruptions.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with a wide range of suppliers and subcontractors, ensuring continued value and reliability.
  • Evaluate supplier performance based on quality, pricing, responsiveness, and delivery history; maintain up-to-date records and review contracts where appropriate.
  • Negotiate pricing, payment terms, and delivery conditions with suppliers, ensuring best value while maintaining quality standards.
  • Review and analyse material usage, forecast future requirements, and identify opportunities for cost savings and efficiencies.
  • Maintain awareness of current market trends, including pricing fluctuations and availability of materials or alternative options.
  • Promote and support the organisations commitment to sustainability by sourcing environmentally responsible products and engaging with suppliers who demonstrate sustainable practices.
  • Ensure full compliance with internal procurement policies and relevant external legislation or frameworks.

Skills and Experience:

  • CIPS qualified or currently working towards certification.
  • Proven experience in a buying or procurement role, ideally within the construction or property maintenance sector.
  • Good understanding of construction materials, supply chain processes, and plant hire.
  • Familiarity with procurement software such as COINS, Causeway, or similar platforms.
  • Working knowledge of social value and sustainable procurement best practices.
  • Experience with public sector contracts and frameworks such as CHIC, Fusion21, or similar is desirable.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and organisational skills.
  • Able to manage multiple procurement activities simultaneously and work to tight deadlines.
