Business Intelligence Developer (BI Developer)

At Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust we put our patients at the heart of every element of health and care that we provide. Following a recent CQC inspection we have been rated "Good", reflecting significant improvements in service delivery. This role contributes to that aim by enhancing the Trust’s information services across the wider health and care system.

The postholder will support the Business Intelligence Lead with responsibility for the Business Intelligence function, managing all aspects of report and dashboard development for the RBH business intelligence system. Reports and dashboards are designed and developed to meet specifications describing customer and internal service user requirements, using tools such as Power BI, Tableau, SQL and SSRS. The role requires a highly technical skill set and a strong focus on delivering high‑quality data and information to support a wide range of reporting, analysis and business intelligence initiatives.

Responsibilities
  • Support the business intelligence and information function to drive strategic decision‑making across Statistics and Planning, Benchmarking and Care Quality, Performance and Quality, Finance and Income Reporting, Activity and Cost, Operational Efficiency and Reporting.
  • Guide and enhance operational teams' understanding of intelligence and insights, supporting informatics leads and principal analysts to work with clinicians and operational teams.
  • Support clinicians and managers in the use and interpretation of information and promote a culture of good data quality and effective use of information.
  • Maintain full working knowledge of the Trust’s information systems, ensuring that any changes impacting analyses are incorporated.
  • Proactively identify innovative ways for continuous improvement within BI data sets alongside the Business Intelligence Lead.
  • Maintain an in‑depth knowledge of the full Royal Berkshire Hospital data model.
  • Maintain full working knowledge of in‑house programming and presentational standards.
  • Produce & maintain routine information content using Trust information systems to meet Trust and NHS requirements and deadlines.
  • Liaise with Trust information users to understand requirements, evaluate and advise on appropriate analysis and presentation.
  • Work closely with other colleagues ensuring triangulation between activity, finance, and workforce plans.
  • Support the team’s contribution to integrated performance reports published as part of established working groups, meetings and committees up to and including the Trust Board and system oversight.
  • Take a pro‑active approach to identifying patterns and signals in data sets and distilling actionable information for clinicians and operational teams.
  • Take a holistic approach to ensure design, development and delivery of analytics and business intelligence in an innovative and meaningful way.
  • Utilise BI tools (e.g. SQL, Power BI and R) to deliver analytics and intelligence ensuring all data products are delivered to best practice.
  • Provide analytical support to transformation programmes of work or pathway initiatives.
  • Communicate within the Trust and across the health and care system on matters that are highly sensitive, complex and contentious, supporting data‑driven decision making even when insight conflicts with expected or preferred outcomes.
Essential Criteria
  • High level of proficiency in SSRS.
  • High level of proficiency in BI tools (SQL, Power BI, Tableau).
  • Experience with DWH data flow.
  • Knowledge of the NHS Data Dictionary and an understanding of NHS performance indicators and quality standards.
Desirable Criteria
  • Experience with project management and data governance.
  • Familiarity with R for advanced analytics.
  • Experience in a healthcare setting with exposure to national and local KPIs.
