Job Description

We are looking to recruit an experienced Business Architect who can work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and deliver excellent results across GDS projects for Version 1's customers in the public sector.

You will be experienced in working with stakeholders at all levels to develop integrated views of complex organisations and applying business architectural principles to support strategic implementation. Your portfolio will demonstrate your ability to understand business scenarios, communicate complex information clearly, and create actionable business architecture artefacts that drive decision‑making.

You'll play a key role in supporting executive‑level work and guiding others in using appropriate business architectural tools and methods. Your work will involve creating abstract representations of the organisation, developing scalable models to aggregate and disaggregate complex information, and ensuring that design work from projects and programmes aligns with strategic objectives.

You will need to be eligible for SC clearance to be considered for this role.

Qualifications

  • You can apply and develop business architecture frameworks, principles and techniques within public sector organisations.
  • You can advise and guide the organisation to inform the implementation of its strategy.
  • You can share the value of business architecture with stakeholders across the organisation.
  • You can produce clear multidimensional views of your organisation to support decision making.
  • Experience working in public sector environments is essential.
Communicating information
  • You can mediate between people and mend relationships, communicating with stakeholders at all levels.
  • You can manage stakeholder expectations and host or moderate discussions about high risk and complexity, even within constrained timescales.
  • You can speak on behalf of and represent the community to large audiences inside and outside of government.
Consultancy
  • You can provide advice and recommendations to stakeholders based on your significant specialist knowledge and experience.
  • You can lead the definition of guidance and inform how the organisation approaches delivery or uses digital and data skills more effectively.
  • You have experience of communicating complex architectural concepts effectively to gain the confidence of internal colleagues and customers.
Making and guiding decisions
  • You can make decisions characterised by medium levels of risk and complexity, and recommend decisions as risk and complexity increase.You can build consensus between services or independent stakeholders.
  • You can identify and articulate issues that cut across different areas of the organisation.
Methods and tools
  • You can build capability in methods and tools, ensuring they are adopted consistently and used effectively.
  • You can select and apply the most appropriate architectural tools and techniques to support business change initiatives.
Stakeholder relationship management
  • You can work with the team to develop and maintain an understanding of stakeholders.
  • You can work with the team to develop and implement stakeholder communications strategies.
  • You can identify and resolve issues, influence stakeholders and manage relationships effectively.
  • You can build long‑term strategic relationships and communicate clearly and regularly with stakeholders.
Strategic design and business change
  • You can demonstrate a good understanding of business issues, events and activities, and their short to long‑term impact.
  • You can support defining principles, patterns, standards, policies, roadmaps and vision statements.
  • You can effectively focus on outcomes rather than solutions.
  • You can help to develop, maintain or update strategy in response to feedback and findings.
Strategic thinking
  • You can define strategies and policies, providing guidance to others on working in the strategic context.
  • You can evaluate current strategies to ensure business requirements are being met and exceeded where possible.
  • You can work within GDS standards and understand the requirements for public sector digital transformation.
Agile working in multidisciplinary teams
  • You understand business architecture practices and know how to align your work to agile workflows across all stages of the development lifecycle.
  • You can work in an open, iterative and collaborative way in a multidisciplinary team.
  • You can support and guide other business architects in the application of architectural principles and methods.
