Building Craftsperson

Job opening within the Estates Department at St Richard's Hospital in Chichester, part of University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. Closing date: 17 November 2025.

The successful applicant may work in any buildings controlled by the Trust. Applicants should have a City & Guilds or NVQ Level 3 qualification in Carpentry & Joinery. Experience fitting, replacing and repairing door locks; cutting keys; repairing and maintaining automatic door systems; and excellent painting skills are required. Experience in bricklaying and proven work within complex building environments is beneficial.

Main duties of the job
  • Carry out carpentry repairs and maintain the building fabric, both internally and externally, across Trust‑owned premises.
  • Deal with incidents such as damaged fire doors, lost or compromised keys, broken glass on doors and windows, and other safety‑related issues.
  • Paint as required and provide assistance to other craftsmen within the Estates Department.
  • Provide a flexible, health‑ and safety‑compliant approach to maintenance functions that may fall outside of the normal scope of the role, given appropriate training and supervision.
  • Execute maintenance tasks on any site owned and maintained by the Trust.
Job responsibilities
  • Planned preventive maintenance (PPM) routines on plant, equipment, building fabric and services in line with manufacturers' recommendations.
  • Repairs and construction of timber fixtures and fittings, including first and second fixing to new and alteration work.
  • Use of access equipment for minor repairs internally and externally, including windows, roof lights and any construction type.
  • Carry out minor repairs to fencing, gates, blinds, curtain tracks, coat hooks, shelving and notice boards.
  • Repair or replace locks, door closers, door furniture and, where possible, cut keys.
  • Work on automatic door systems, fit or replace laminates and Formica materials to fixtures.
  • Repair all types of timber flooring; carry out defective item maintenance to return items to service within target time‑frames.
  • Erect and dismantle trestles, hop‑ups, staging, ladders and step‑ladders; training required.
  • Attend required training courses, including health‑and‑safety requirements.
  • Advise the Team Leader of health and safety or maintenance issues that may affect building fabric and clinical services.
  • Develop and maintain good relationships with clinicians, departmental heads, risk management and contractors.
