Job Title: Building Surveyor

Pay rate: £26.62 per hour PAYE
Role length: Anticipated 5 months
Additional requirement: Driving Licence, as will need to travel around the area to work on site to monitor projects
We are looking for a qualified and professional Building Surveyor who will be responsible for delivering planned and cyclical works within the council's housing stock, liaising with and directing external contractors and the in-house team to ensure statutory compliance and quality standards, while also preparing tender documentation and specifications for planned maintenance projects and refurbishment schemes.
Key responsibilities
- Manage contractors on maintenance, refurbishment, and cyclical projects; hold site meetings and liaise with residents to ensure work meets time, budget, and quality standards
- Conduct pre/post inspections, diagnose defects, estimate budgets, and prepare drawings, specs, and tender documents in line with legislation and best practices
- Apply for planning permissions, building regs, and structural approvals; handle full contract administration and liaise with audits and Council teams
- Lead procurement and tendering, ensuring contractors meet required standards and accreditations
- Oversee and sign off works to ensure quality, budget, and timelines are met
- Survey buildings and technical systems to identify defects and recommend improvement works, including accident reports and insurance claims.
- Administer contracts and verify completed works and payments in line with Council procedures
- Monitor performance, especially around health and safety compliance
- Liaise with residents, stakeholders, and external bodies; handle complaints, attend events, and respond to complex enquiries
- Submit and manage approvals for planning and regulatory consents
- Maintain accurate asset and project records for legal, analytical, and operational use
What the client is looking for
- Degree-level qualification or equivalent experience with a relevant professional certification in building surveying or construction management
- Knowledge of contract and project management techniques, including cost and quality control
- In-depth knowledge of construction or engineering regulations, legislation, and procedures
- Expert understanding of health and safety laws and their application across construction, engineering, maintenance, and repairs
- Proven track record in delivering construction, planned maintenance, cyclical repairs, and minor improvement projects
- Skilled in managing workloads, juggling priorities, and supervising contractors or external teams
- Clear and confident communicator with the ability to explain complex technical issues and lead others effectively
