Building Surveyor

Exeter

Up to £44,149

37 Hours per week

South West Norse is part of the Norse Group, a national, award-winning property consultancy delivering services to a range of public and private sector clients across the UK. We offer local delivery supported by national capability.

With offices in Exeter, South West Norse are dedicated to delivering professional services across a range of property management disciplines including building surveying, architectural design, M&E engineering, project management and estate management.

The role will be based in our modern open plan office on the outskirts of Exeter with very good access off the M5 corridor making for an easy commute. We also employ an agile and flexible working strategy allowing staff to work some days at home and flex their working patterns. By its nature the role will also involve a high degree of site‑based survey work mainly throughout Devon.

Responsibilities

South West Norse is recruiting a Building Surveyor to carry out detailed condition surveys and asbestos compliance checks on buildings. Asset condition surveys form the basis of our clients’ targeting their limited funds on priority issues and for attracting essential funding for much needed repairs, maintenance and improvements. The type of survey can be varied and the candidate may also be required to prepare schedules of condition, dilapidation claims, planned maintenance programmes and technical reports. The type and range of property to be surveyed is varied and includes corporate buildings, depots, schools, libraries, let‑tenanted farms, etc. The candidate should have knowledge and understanding of the RICS guidance 'Building Surveys and Technical Due Diligence of Commercial Property', 'Surveying Assets in the Built Environment', and other RICS guidance.

The role will also involve checking the condition of known ACMs listed on existing asbestos registers. The candidate will need a basic P402 asbestos qualification or be prepared to train for it ASAP. The role does not involve taking asbestos samples, however our customers need them to see our surveyors can assess the condition of known items.

The role requires frequent travel and remote working, mainly within Devon. The candidate will have a high level of autonomy to plan their own programmes of work and site visits.

Our Successful Candidate

You will demonstrate your suitability through:

  • Ideally have a degree in a building surveying related subject and be working towards a Chartered Membership with the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

  • Hold a minimum of a P402 asbestos qualification.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to engage and negotiate with all levels of internal and external parties.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal support or within a large multi‑disciplinary team.
