Job summary

Ipswich Borough Council is seeking a Building Surveyor to join the busy Maintenance and Contracts team, managing a varied residential portfolio in Ipswich. You will apply robust surveying techniques and governance to deliver improvements on site and in planning work.

The role requires excellent communication, a sound knowledge of surveying techniques, health and safety awareness, and three years’ experience with degree level preferred.

Qualifications

  • Good understanding of Health and Safety and an awareness.
  • Strong numerical analysis and analytical thinking.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate up-to-date knowledge of technical issues related to construction and maintenance of buildings, determine condition, identify and analyse defects, and propose repairs.
  • Advise on energy efficiency and sustainability of buildings.
  • Use a wide range of ICT operating systems.
  • Ideally educated at degree level or working towards it with three years of qualitative experience.

Ipswich Borough Council is a progressive local authority with a large and varied property portfolio.

Maintenance and Contracts spend circa. £25 million annually, repairing and improving a retained housing stock of around 8000 properties and 13 sheltered schemes to our local "Ipswich Standard".

The council takes a holistic approach to stock management and has one seamless service that is now responsible for everything in connection with the asset management of that stock. This involves everything from the initial design to completing works on site on a right first-time basis using our own directly employed trade teams and external contractors.

This is an exciting time to join the Maintenance and Contracts team at Ipswich Borough Council helping to deliver the council’s vision and ambitions by growing the property portfolio and using assets in more innovative ways. You will play a critical role in the Building Surveying team delivering its operational objectives that will make a difference to the councils housing tenants.

Maintenance and Contracts has an opportunity for a Building Surveyor to join our busy team dealing with a varied and diverse residential portfolio of properties within the borough of Ipswich. Day to day

You will be expected to manage your own time flexibly and effectively, whilst working with a larger team of professional people undertaking various building surveying works and involvement with projects.

About you

As a Building Surveyor, you will be responsible for delivering numerous key objectives using robust techniques and governance.

You must have:

  • excellent communication skills
  • a sound understanding of building surveying techniques and related issues within the industry
  • a good understanding of relevant Health and Safety and an awareness
  • strong numerical analysis and analytical thinking.

You will:

  • be required to demonstrate up to date knowledge of technical issues related to the construction and maintenance of buildings, determine their condition, identify and analyse defects, including proposals for repairs, damp and mould issues
  • advise on energy efficiency, environmental impact and sustainability of buildings
  • have the ability to use a wide range of ICT operating systems.
  • ideally be educated at degree level or working towards this and have three years’ qualitative experience.
You will need key skills in:
  • Building Surveying Services and managing associated resources
  • Health and Safety
  • ICT
  • procurement (preferable)
  • a similar environment
  • planning and building control knowledge.
