Job description
Building Services Design Manager

Location: Hybrid - Cheshire / Wilmslow

Salary: £50,000 - £70,000 + Benefits

Contract: Full-time, Permanent

Our client is far more than an energy consultancy. They are a multi-disciplinary M&E Consultancy, delivering innovative, low-energy projects across domestic, commercial, and public sectors.

The business operates through two specialist divisions:

  • An Energy Consulting Team – advising on energy and decarbonisation plans for vicarages, schools, churches, hospitals, offices and more.
  • A growing M&E Design Team – delivering exceptional new build and retrofit projects, across a wide variety of sectors, which also includes Passivhaus projects. They’re known for being passionate about sustainability – researching it daily, pushing boundaries, and genuinely enjoying the technical detail.

It’s a highly collaborative, social team environment, and a shared drive to build a company that’s shaping the future of Net Zero construction in the UK.

As Building Services Design Manager, you will lead the M&E Design team and play a pivotal role in shaping both project delivery and internal processes as the company scales. You’ll manage a talented group of four engineers (two juniors, one senior, and one mechanical engineer), while also remaining hands‑on in design work, client engagement, and quality control.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Leading and developing the M&E engineering team – delegating workload, conducting appraisals, and ensuring strong technical output.
  • Overseeing mechanical and electrical design across RIBA Stages 1-6 for new builds, retrofits, and low-energy projects.
  • Reviewing designs, attending client meetings, and supporting tenders, quotes, and technical submissions.
  • Collaborating closely with the Energy Consulting team on decarbonisation strategies and sustainable building solutions.
  • Developing internal systems, processes, and resources to strengthen project delivery within the M&E division.
  • Spending regular time on site to ensure quality, coordination, and compliance.
  • Networking and relationship‑building with architects, clients, and supply chain partners to help drive business growth.
Essential requirements:
  • Proven experience in mechanical or electrical building services design, ideally in a design & build setting.
  • Experience managing and mentoring technical teams.
  • Strong knowledge of sustainable design, renewables, and low-energy building systems.
  • Confident working with clients, architects, and stakeholders.
  • Hands‑on approach with the ability to both design and manage.
  • A collaborative mindset and strong problem‑solving skills.
What's on Offer
  • Salary: £50,000 - £70,000 (DOE)
  • Hybrid working: typically 3 days office / 2 from home
  • 28 days holiday + 8 bank holidays
  • 6% employer pension contribution
  • Private medical insurance
  • Electric vehicle & cycle‑to‑work schemes
  • Sustainable volunteering day
  • Paid quarterly team lunches & social events
