Purpose of the Role

To support the Senior Building Control Team Leader in establishing an in-house Building Control service within Crawley BC initially on an interim basis with access to existing application data and services out of Sussex Building Control at Horsham DC. To support work transitioning successfully building control data and services out of Sussex Building Control shared service run by Horsham District Council.

The postholder will be responsible for managing and processing a case load of building control applications – mainly building notice / site inspection applications with also full plan checks requiring a competence of 2D to 2F plus where required regularization and reversion applications.

The postholder will provide technical advice to applicants, builders, residents, developers, businesses / local stakeholders and respond to day-to-day queries, and assist in ensuring compliance with statutory duties under the Building Act 1984 and Building Safety Act 2022.

The postholder will support the work of the Data and Administration Manager in setting up the systems and processes for the Crawley Building Control Team required to manage and handle new building control applications successfully and to pick up existing and legacy applications passed over to Crawley Building Control by Sussex Building Control.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with the Senior Building Control Team Leader and colleagues at Sussex Building Control to set up a new applications service managed by Crawley Building Control, dealing with site inspections, building notices etc and manage successfully the transition of all Crawley building control data and statutory minimum services from Sussex Building Control into Crawley Borough Council.
  • Provide technical advice and guidance on building control matters to developers, residents, and internal stakeholders.
  • Assist in the assessment and processing of Initial Notices submitted by Approved Inspectors.
  • Support enforcement activities under the Building Act 1984, including inspections and documentation.
  • Respond to complaints and queries regarding building safety and compliance.
  • Maintain accurate records and contribute to the management of building control data.
  • Collaborate with the Data and Administration Manager to ensure efficient service delivery.
  • Participate in inspections and site visits as required, applying a risk-based approach.
  • Ensure compliance with fire safety legislation and support public protection duties.
Essential Requirements
  • Registered Building Control Inspector (minimum Grade 2D).
  • Demonstrable experience in local authority building control functions.
  • Knowledge of the Building Safety Act 2022 and Building Regulations.
  • Ability to provide clear, accurate technical advice and documentation.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
