Job summary

An education support organization based in Cambridge is seeking a dedicated professional to assist Deaf learners in various educational settings. The ideal candidate will have a Full Level 3 Certificate in British Sign Language and experience working with Deaf students.   • Prepared to travel to support students during activities outside of the classroom.

Primary Purpose

The primary purpose of this job role is to:

To support Deaf learners in a range of educational and training settings, facilitating communication between learner, staff and peers, using appropriate modes of communication and other strategies and ensuring optimal access.

Responsibilities
  • To work in class with deaf learners to facilitate communication and access using a range of communication modes and strategies as appropriate (e.g., note‑taking, BSL/SSE, Lip speaking and language modification).
  • To liaise closely with teaching staff regarding the delivery of the course, advising as appropriate on the modification and differentiation of the learning environment, materials, and delivery styles.
  • To advise teaching and other staff on appropriate communication strategies when working with d/Deaf learners.
  • To provide support for activities outside the classroom, for instance, residential trips and visits.
  • To adapt and modify language where appropriate (including curriculum and learning materials).
  • To voice over for d/Deaf learners where appropriate.
  • To facilitate the use of technical aids in the learning environment, e.g., the use of minicom, radio aids, etc.
  • To provide appropriate support to students during examinations and assessments, according to guidelines issued by the awarding bodies.
  • To transcribe videos and prepare learning materials appropriate to the needs of specific deaf learners.
Personal Specification
  • Full Level 3 Certificate in British Sign Language.
  • GCSE/level 2 qualification in Math's and English.
  • Experience of supporting in FE or an educational establishment.
  • Experience working with d/Deaf learners.
  • Prepared to travel to support students during activities outside of the classroom and working off site.
  • May involve some evening work on a regular basis and some weekend work on occasions.
