Job description

The University of Southampton has been selected to lead the British Academy Early Career Researcher Network (ECRN) for the South East, together with Canterbury Christ Church University and Buckinghamshire New University. The BA ECRN is an inclusive, researcher-led membership body accessible to UK-based early career researchers (ECRs) working in the humanities and social sciences, regardless of their funding source or background. We invite applications for the role of network officer to support the establishment and running of this regional BA ECRN. The post is financed externally by the British Academy until 31 March 2027 in the first instance, with the possibility of extending subject to funding.

The post holder will lead on the coordination, delivery, and evaluation of the BA ECRN South East Cluster and support the British Academy in its ambitions to continue its national leadership in early career development support across the Arts and Social Sciences disciplines. They will help the delivery partners to reach beyond their respective institutions to influence the national and international landscape of early career researcher development support. The successful candidate will provide administrative support for the running of the BA ECR Network for the South East on a 0.5 FTE basis (2.5 days a week).

Responsibilities
  • Organization of around ten events over the course of the year (aiming for 3/4 in person/hybrid and 6 online events)
  • Administrative support with building the network with the 17 universities in the cluster
  • Scheduling of organisational meetings across the cluster
  • Supporting organisation of social networking activities for ECRs
  • Reporting to the British Academy
  • Advertising and promotion of events and opportunities to the cluster
  • Travelling to co‑lead partner universities for scheduled visits and to attend in‑person events in their host institution
Qualifications

Applicants will be educated to degree level/level 6 vocational qualifications or equivalent level of practical experience. The successful candidate will have relevant experience in project administration, be numerate, have experience of organising events and good IT skills, including experience with communication platforms such as social media and website management. The post holder will be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills, working equally well on their own initiative and as part of a team.

While the post holder will be based at Southampton, the officer will support events across the cluster, some of which will be hosted by our delivery partners Canterbury Christ Church University and Buckinghamshire New University. We therefore expect the post holder to work closely with the Faculty of Arts and Humanities ECR Champion and Associate Dean Research and Enterprise as Southampton leads for the network, our delivery partners, cluster partners, contacts at the British Academy, and our ECR communities.
