Job summary

AECOM invites applications for a Bridge Structures Engineering Apprentice based in Cardiff, with a 2027 start. The role is full-time and hybrid, joining the Bridges team to gain hands-on experience from concept to implementation on diverse projects.

The apprenticeship targets school leavers with GCSEs and A-Levels, offering progression toward EngTech and IEng status while developing CAD and design skills in a collaborative environment.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade C/4 or above, including Maths and English.
  • Three A-Levels (or equivalent such as BTEC Level 3 in Civil Engineering), including Maths and a physical science – required for Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship.

Responsibilities

  • Produce CAD (Computer-Aided Design) drawings.
  • Support structural design and desktop publishing tasks.
  • Assist with project administration and record-keeping.
  • Review and analyse data; contribute to problem-solving and design solutions.
  • Participate in site visits to gather information or observe conditions.
  • Work toward EngTech status, then IEng status with ICE or IStructE.

We are seeking enthusiastic and motivatedCivil & Structural Engineering Apprenticesto join ourBridges team in Cardiff.

As an apprentice, you’ll gain hands‑on experience working on a wide range of projects, from concept design to implementation, for clients operating locally, nationally, and internationally. You’ll be part of a team that values technical excellence, innovation, and collaboration.

Our Bridges team leads the industry in delivering complex and impactful infrastructure. You may be involved in assessing and maintaining the UK’s bridge network or designing structural renewals for major transport hubs. We use cutting‑edge technology and work closely with other disciplines across AECOM to deliver integrated, sustainable solutions.

Current and recent projects include:

  • CAFA Wessex
  • Thames Water pipe bridges
  • M40 DBFO
  • Various bridge assessment and inspection projects for local authorities

As an apprentice, you will:

  • Produce CAD (Computer-Aided Design) drawings
  • Support structural design and desktop publishing tasks
  • Assist with project administration and record‑keeping
  • Review and analyse dataContribute to problem‑solving and design solutions
  • Participate in site visits to gather information or observe conditions
  • Work toward achieving Engineering Technician (EngTech) status, and later Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status with the ICE or IStructE

This role is ideal for school leavers (GCSE or A-Level) who can demonstrate the following:

  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs(or equivalent) at grade C/4 or above, including Mathematics and English
  • Three A-Levels(or equivalent such as BTEC Level 3 in Civil Engineering), including Maths and a physical science at grade C or above –required for Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship
  • Some experience or shadowing in an engineering environment (preferred)
  • Interest in software‑based engineering and design (e.g., CAD, 3D modelling)
  • Passion for bridge structures and a desire to build a career in this field
  • Commitment to ongoing learning and professional development
  • Creative, practical, adaptable, and enthusiastic mindset
  • Strong attention to detail and methodical thinking
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
