Job summary

Arcadis is seeking a Bridge Engineer to join our growing rail design team in York, delivering high-profile rail infrastructure projects across the UK. You will contribute to design solutions within budget and time constraints while benefiting from mentoring and support toward Chartered Engineer status.

The role involves delivering civil/structural design tasks, working in BIM environments, and collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams to ensure quality outcomes.

Qualifications

• Masters degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
• Student/Graduate ICE or IStructE membership.
• Experience in bridge/structural/civil design, ideally in consultancy and rail exposure.
• Progressing towards Chartered status with ICE or IStructE.
• Experience using design software to prepare deliverables.
• Awareness of BIM and CDE workflows.
• Strong written and verbal communication, good planning and organization.
• Proactive, collaborative and delivery-focused with willingness to learn.
• Willingness to travel occasionally within the UK.

Responsibilities

• Support delivery of civil and structural design tasks across rail and multi-sector projects.
• Prepare design calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical reports to standards.
• Work within 3D design and BIM environments (AECOSim, Revit, Civil 3D) and in a Common Data Environment.
• Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to resolve issues and deliver coordinated designs.
• Assist with project documentation and help achieve programme, budget and quality targets.
• Attend site visits and surveys within rail environments as required.
• Foster strong relationships with clients, colleagues and stakeholders.
• Follow company health and safety requirements and contribute to a positive safety culture.
• Develop technical and project delivery skills through mentoring and on-the-job learning.

Role Accountabilities

• Support the delivery of civil and structural design tasks across rail and multi‑sector projects.
• Prepare design calculations, drawings, specifications, reports and other technical documentation in line with company, client and industry standards.
• Work within 3D design and BIM environments, including platforms such as AECOSim, Revit and Civil 3D, and contribute to projects delivered through a Common Data Environment.
• Collaborate with multi‑disciplinary teams to help resolve technical issues and deliver coordinated design solutions.
• Assist with project documentation and contribute to achieving programme, budget and quality targets.
• Attend site visits and surveys, including within rail environments, where required.
• Build effective working relationships with clients, colleagues and project stakeholders.
• Follow Arcadis systems, procedures, and health, safety and welfare requirements, while supporting a positive safety culture.
• Actively develop technical, professional and project delivery skills through on‑the‑job learning and mentoring.

Qualifications & Experience

• Master’s degree in Civil Engineering.
• Student or Graduate membership of ICE or IStructE.
• Experience in bridge and/or structural/civil design, ideally gained within a consultancy environment and with some exposure to the rail sector.
• Progressing towards Chartered Engineer status with ICE or IStructE.
• Experience using civil engineering design software to prepare design deliverables.
• Awareness of BIM principles and working within a Common Data Environment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with good planning and organisational ability.
• Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office.
• Proactive, collaborative and delivery‑focused approach, with a willingness to take on new challenges and continue learning.
• Flexibility to travel occasionally within the UK.
