Bladder and Bowel Specialist Nurse

South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust

The post holder will be required to undertake holistic continence assessments, and work with patients to develop individualised treatment programmes to promote continence. The post holder will hold clinics in both Sunderland and South Tyneside and visit patients in their home when the patient is unable to attend clinic.

The post holder will contribute to the delivery of the education programme for both Trust Staff and care home staff.

Informal visits encouraged.

Job responsibilities

  • Acts as a source of specialist advice for residents in South Tyneside and Sunderland including their families and carers, with bladder and bowel problems/incontinence, also including healthcare staff/agencies who are part of multi‑disciplinary care provision.
  • To work in collaboration with the Clinical Team Manager to provide best practice in accordance with local and national policy and guidelines.
  • To plan and deliver specialist clinical treatment/management/advice in a nurse‑led community clinic and domiciliary setting.
  • Manage own patient caseload to ensure appropriate and timely service is provided.
  • Provide education and training within primary care including residential and nursing homes.
Person Specification
Physical Skills
  • Able to move and handle safety without causing harm to themselves or others.
  • Physical dexterity to carry out post related tasks e.g. bowel irrigation, catheterisation.
Experience
  • Excellent knowledge of Bladder and Bowel.
  • Ability to prioritise and self‑manage own caseload.
  • Ability to provide training sessions to other members of nursing teams.
  • Experience of working in continence care or urology, gynaecology, colorectal nursing.
  • Leadership role.
  • Experience of practice development / project work.
  • Previous community experience.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development, willingness to maintain and extend skills and knowledge.
  • Excellent inter‑personal and communication skills to forge relationships with colleagues and others for the benefit of patient care and caseload co‑ordination.
  • Be able to demonstrate organized way of working and ability to plan time effectively.
  • Be able to assess, plan, implement and evaluate programs of care for complex bladder and bowel conditions.
  • Teaching qualification or evidence of teaching experience.
  • Car driver and valid driving licence.
  • Clinical skills.
  • Non‑Medical Prescribing.
Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse with evidence of current NMC registration.
  • Degree in a nursing/health related subject or working towards.
  • Completed or willing to complete Clinical skills.
