Job summary

Concurrent is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to join a team delivering high-performance embedded computing solutions across defence, telecoms, and aerospace. You will design and maintain UEFI BIOS/bootloader firmware, integrate board-level hardware, and collaborate with hardware designers through design, bring-up and validation phases.

The role requires proficiency in Embedded C for x86/PowerPC/ARM, strong debugging skills, and ability to work in a small interdisciplinary team.

Qualifications

  • Substantial experience developing UEFI BIOS, or related bootloader firmware based on EDK2, Slimboot or Intel FSP.
  • Proficient in Embedded C programming for x86, PowerPC, or high-performance ARM processors.
  • Practical experience programming a variety of hardware devices at the register level.
  • Excellent problem-solving and debugging skills.
  • Familiarity with schematics and datasheets to support hardware bring-up and debugging.
  • Ability to apply a systematic approach to software debugging, ensuring thorough and efficient resolution of issues.
  • Ability to communicate in English and to work in an interdisciplinary engineering and project team.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary engineering team.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and maintain the UEFI BIOS and bootloader software, including integration of board-level hardware such as PCIe, USB, Ethernet, I2C, and GPIO.
  • End-to-end development as part of a small team.
  • Collaborate with hardware designers during design, bring-up and validation phases.
  • Define test software plans with the realisation team.
  • Address challenging customer issues escalated to engineering.
  • Support product specification in partnership with hardware and software teams.
  • Participate in security feature implementation.

The Role

The constant requirement for new, better, and more complex products means that the company requires an additional BIOS Engineer. The Software Engineering team is responsible for breathing life into our computer products by creating and maintaining the BIOS, and Board Support Packages (as well as additional software) required for their operation.

Based at our Colchester or Theale site on a full-time/hybrid basis or open to remote worker!We have flexible working with core hours of 10am to 3pm – working 37.5 hours per week.

What will I be delivering?

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop and maintain the UEFI BIOS and other bootloader software. Including integration of board-level hardware: PCIe, USB, Ethernet, I2C, GPIO, UART, and other common embedded interfaces.
  • You will be involved in end to end development as part of a small team.
  • Work with our hardware designers:
  • During the design phase to specify the product
  • During board bring up to get the prototype hardware working
  • During the design proving phase to validate the product
  • Work closely with the realisation team in defining test software plans.
  • Work on challenging customer issues that get escalated to engineering team.
  • Working with the hardware design authorities and software architect to support product specification.
  • Participate in security feature implementation.

The hardware and software platforms vary, but most of the devices used are complex and a good appreciation of the hardware is a pre-requisite for this role.

What do I need to bring with me?
