Job summary

The Pathology departments at University Hospitals North Tees and Hartlepool (NTH) and South Tees Hospitals (STH) are working collaboratively to develop a joint service called Tees Valley Pathology (TVP) with services being delivered on all hospital sites.

We are seeking applications from suitably qualified, enthusiastic HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists with appropriate experience, knowledge and skills to join our scientific team and participate in the delivery of services provided by Blood Transfusion and Haematology as part of the TVP service operating out of University Hospital North Tees and Hartlepool Hospital, Stockton on Tees, Hartlepool Hospital, The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough and the Friarage Hospital, Northallerton.

Candidates for the Specialist Biomedical Scientist (Band 6) roles should be HCPC state registered, hold an IBMS Specialist Portfolio and have experience of working various shifts across both core and non‑core hours in their chosen discipline.

Depending on the level of qualifications and degree of experience from applications for the Specialist Biomedical Scientist (Band 6) posts, consideration will also be given to applicants who are newly qualified HCPC candidates and who may be working towards these qualifications and thus be applicable for employment at Registered Biomedical Scientist (Band 5) level.

Responsibilities
  • Rotation through all sections within the chosen department to gain a wide range of experience.
  • Take a leading role in achieving daily workload targets, requiring strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Analyse pathology specimens and provide technically accurate results; be professionally accountable for the interpretation of patients' results to enable diagnostic and treatment regimes for clinical colleagues.
  • Provide specialist knowledge and assistance within the area of responsibility to aid diagnosis and treatment of patients.
  • Work with senior staff to support the integration of Haematology into Pathology from a staff, IT and technological perspective.
  • Attend all TVP sites as necessary.
  • Maintain specialist knowledge of all sections of the service and participate in research and development activities.
  • Participate in the training and development of new, trainee or support staff.
  • After completion of training, participate in the out‑of‑hours rota, including late shifts, nights and weekends.

Qualifications
  • IBMS Accredited Degree (Band 5 & 6)
  • Completed Registration Portfolio / HCPC registered (Band 5 & 6)
  • Completed a Specialist Portfolio in an appropriate discipline (Band 6 only)
  • Evidence of continuous professional development (CPD) (Band 5 & 6)
Experience
  • Experience of working in an accredited NHS clinical Haematology, Coagulation and Blood Transfusion department (Band 5 & 6)
  • Experience of computer packages (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint) (Band 5 & 6)
  • Experience of Quality Management Systems and ISO 15189 standards (Band 6 only)
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques and Biomedical science (Band 5 & 6)
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and health‑safety measures (Band 5 & 6)
  • Ability to understand new technological advances (Band 5 & 6)
  • Working knowledge of Pathology IT Systems (Band 6 only)
