Biomedical Scientist (Specialist)

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Biomedical Scientist to gain experience in a busy clinical laboratory within a large acute Trust.

The microbiology laboratory is situated in a purpose built facility, is well-equipped, fully computerised, holds UKAS accreditation and is an IBMS registered training laboratory. We currently offer diagnostic microbiology to University Hospital Dorset and other healthcare providers from one laboratory based in the new Dorset Pathology Hub at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital.

The configuration of the Microbiology service across Dorset is currently under review with a vision to provide a Dorset wide service supported by laboratories based at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital and at Dorset County Hospital.

The position is for a band 5 or band 6 Biomedical Scientist, dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Candidates should have as a minimum, current HCPC registration and previous experience of working in an NHS Microbiology laboratory. There will be the opportunity to work in all sections of the department and will receive full training and support relevant to their level of experience.

Working hours are 28.5 per week, which includes participation in a weekend rota and an extended working day rota.

You will be required to participate in the weekend and evening rota.

Base Location: The Royal Bournemouth Hospital

Main duties of the job

Duties will include all aspects of diagnostic bacteriology, parasitology, mycology, serology and molecular virology.

Job responsibilities

A HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist providing a specialised, diagnostic, clinical microbiology service contributing to clinical care of patients and control of infectious diseases within the hospital and community. The post holder will be competent to work independently in all areas of the laboratory. The post holder will supervise, train and mentor Biomedical Support Workers and trainee Biomedical Scientists.
