Job description

Overview

Advert may close once sufficient number of applications is reached. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly Histology team for 27 hours per week.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified, HCPC state-registered Biomedical scientists. The successful applicant will rotate through all sections of the department, including Specimen dissection, Processing / Microtomy and Immunohistochemistry.

The pathology departments at NTH and STH are working collaboratively to develop a joint service with services being delivered on both hospital sites. This will require cross‑site working as appropriate.

The department operates between 07.00 - 18.00 Monday to Friday and the post holder is expected to work flexibly within these hours. In addition, the post holder is required to work a 1:6 Saturday rota.

The Department has UKAS accreditation and IBMS training approval and has a well‑established CPD programme.

Under the direction of the Cellular Pathology Management team, the post holder will be required to perform routine day‑to‑day operations within these departments, rotating between all sections within the specialty following approved methodologies and procedures. To assist in the training and development of Trainee Biomedical Scientists, Higher Healthcare Science Support Workers, Healthcare Support Workers and other staff grades according to departmental policy.

Main duties include :

• Work within the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Standards of Proficiency for Biomedical Scientists.
• Perform, unsupervised a range of, automated, semi‑automated and manual techniques in use within the department for the analysis of tissue and body fluids according to SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures).
• Pay attention to detail and accuracy is required in a busy environment where there is very little time allocated to each sample in order to maintain turnaround times both for samples from GP and hospital patients.
• Ensure all procedures to maintain service provision, during routine or emergency technical or electrical failures/shutdowns, are followed.
• Perform all methods and procedures according to the SOP (standard operating procedure) and be responsible for ensuring all equipment is used and maintained in a safe and responsible manner in accordance with Health and Safety legislation.
• Supervise the work of Associate Practitioner and Healthcare Support staff as and when required, ensuring relevant SOPs are followed.
• Responsible for the technical correctness, accurate recording, interpretation and authorisation of test results.
• Initiate further actions as necessary on test results that show variances from normal range.
• Responsible for the organisation of own daily workload within the rostered section to ensure effective and efficient running of the service on a daily basis.
• Communicate with service users, providing information as necessary on investigations and test results daily.
• Participate in internal and external audit activities as required.
• Participate in clinical audit activities as required.
• Participate in discussions regarding clinical and technical issues in the laboratory, offering suggestions for change to practice where appropriate.
• Carry out method development and evaluation of tests as and when required, identified as part of service development.
• Responsible for ensuring internal quality control and external quality assurance procedures meet the required standards to ensure test result accuracy and reliability.
• Help in the maintenance of adequate stock levels, ensuring effective and efficient use of resources at all times.
• Liaise with Central Sort staff regarding pre‑analytical processing of samples and with staff from other departments regarding shared use of equipment, samples etc.
