Job description
Overview

HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with strong post‑registration experience in a diagnostic microbiology laboratory is required, with completion of the specialist portfolio in Microbiology. Consideration may be given to candidates newly HCPC registered with strong Microbiology experience.

Stoke Mandeville Hospital is part of Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust. The laboratory operates a seven day rota and personnel will participate in the shift system to ensure 24‑hour coverage for patients in the Trust hospitals.

Responsibilities
  • Be part of a friendly team working in the Microbiology/Serology Department, rotating across sections to learn all aspects of the diagnostic microbiology service.
  • Deliver and develop a comprehensive clinical microbiology/serology service, meeting quality standards required for accreditation.
  • Ensure protocols are followed and documentation maintained to uphold Quality, Health, Safety and Security for individuals, the Department and the Trust.
  • Participate in training and development of technical, medical and support staff and pursue own professional development and service improvement.
  • Contribute to 24‑hour service coverage, including weekend and bank holiday rotas.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council as a Biomedical Scientist (HCPC).
  • A Biomedical Science Degree or equivalent.
  • Participation in CPD and relevant IBMS Specialist portfolio or equivalent.
  • Experience of standard diagnostic methods in the relevant pathology discipline and strong post‑registration experience in a diagnostic pathology laboratory.
  • Must be able to work some weekends and bank holidays and participate in rota to ensure 24‑hour cover.
  • Willingness/ability to travel to other sites.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Safety regulations relating to safe working in pathology laboratories and categorisation of biological agents according to hazard.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills to ensure clear communication of result data to other healthcare staff.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative.
  • Computer keyboard skills and basic use of Microsoft Office suite.
  • Good manual dexterity and accurate pipetting skills.
  • Knowledge of laboratory quality assurance processes.
