Job description

South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology (SYBP) is on a transformational journey that will fully integrate our existing pathology services, providing the best possible service for patients and clinicians across the Integrated Care System. It is our mission to deliver high-quality and innovative laboratory medicine solutions to patients, clinicians and partners to improve health, add value to patient care, safeguard best clinical outcomes and support the transformation of healthcare across SYB and beyond.

A vacancy has arisen for a Biomedical Scientist to join our Clinical Chemistry department at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, part of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology Network hosted by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (STH). The successful candidate will rotate between acute, metabolic and regional newborn bloodspot screening.

We are seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic Biomedical Scientist with a flexible approach to work and a commitment to out‑of‑hours services (24/7, 365 days). Applicants must possess an IBMS accredited degree in Biomedical Sciences, ideally with relevant experience in Clinical Chemistry, and hold current registration with the HCPC. For a Band 6 role, candidates must have completed the IBMS specialist portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in out‑of‑hours services and rotate between acute, metabolic and newborn screening for 24/7, 365‑day coverage.
  • Ensure all tests are performed efficiently within the assigned time and in accordance with established protocols to the required standards.
  • Assist in maintaining high scientific and technical standards in the laboratory.
  • Maintain complex pieces of laboratory equipment to ensure accurate and reliable results.
  • Account for own professional actions and work for long periods without direct supervision.
  • Assist in monitoring quality standards and perform audits as directed.
  • Monitor stock levels and assist senior members of staff with ordering and organising stock as required.
  • Participate in regular CPD activities to keep knowledge and experience up to date.
Qualifications & Conditions
  • IBMS accredited degree in Biomedical Sciences, with relevant experience in Clinical Chemistry.
  • Current HCPC registration.
  • For Band 6: completion of the IBMS specialist portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry.
  • Flexible and enthusiastic approach to working and out‑of‑hours service.
  • Banding will start at Band 5 unless you meet the threshold for Band 6.
  • Requirement for skilled‑worker visa sponsorship: if you do not meet UK Government eligibility thresholds, you will not be eligible for sponsorship from the Trust.
