Job summary

Detailed job description and main responsibilities: To provide day to day management of the histology laboratory in collaboration with other team leaders and the histology laboratory manager. To provide all line management duties for the histology laboratory team.

Key responsibilities
  • Facilitate the provision of clinical technical services of the histology laboratory by supervising and instructing staff and maintaining resources.
  • Communicate to the Laboratory Manager information required to maintain service provision.
  • Assist the Laboratory Manager with personnel issues and deputise in their absence.
  • Undertake training of scientific and support staff.
  • Maintain adequate consumable and reagent stock levels.
  • Act as a training officer for the department.
Main tasks
  • Supervise staff and prioritise workload to meet deadlines.
  • Ensure compliance with Health and Safety for staff and laboratory areas.
  • Assist in validation, verification, and production of Standard Operating Procedures for analyses and equipment care.
  • Maintain stocks of reagents and consumables, including temperature-controlled items, to ensure patient safety.
  • Maintain maintenance contracts for temperature monitoring systems.
  • Conduct audits and coordinate NEQAS/EQA submissions.
  • Audit histology error logs and perform root cause analysis with corrective actions.
  • Analyse monthly operational statistics for the Directorate Manager.
  • Arrange service contracts and maintain equipment across sites as required.
  • Arrange annual maintenance contracts and purchases of standing orders and consumables.
  • Carry out appraisals.
