South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology (SYBP) is on a transformational journey that will fully integrate our existing pathology services, providing the best possible service for patients and clinicians across the Integrated Care System. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a permanent full time and a fixed term part time Biomedical Science Assistant within the department of Blood Sciences.

As a suitably trained individual you will work in a busy, modern laboratory undertaking data entry and initial processing of patient samples while supporting the associate practitioners and biomedical scientists.

Duties also include answering requests and providing test results by telephone and additional clerical duties.

Proficiency in keyboard use together with good communication and team‑working skills is required, as is an aptitude in both numeracy and literacy and the ability to work accurately.

Candidates will be expected to work variable shifts (including nights, weekends and bank holidays) and will work on the Barnsley site to deliver the necessary service.

Main duties of the job

Pre‑analytical processing of samples to include receipt, preparation and processing. Store, retrieve and dispose of biological material according to the relevant procedures.

Deal with direct queries from medical staff, nursing staff and other service users including telephone enquiries and taking appropriate action as necessary.

Assist in maintaining high scientific and technical standards.

Promote and maintain a high standard of relevant education and training.

Adhere to all Trust and departmental policies.

Maintain clinical records in relation to activities carried out and may input/interrogate test results of others.

May be required to supervise, organise and allocate work and/or train less experienced staff in own area.

We are looking to appoint for 1 permanent full time position and 1 part time fixed term contract for 12 months.

The part time position for this vacancy - This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term contract basis for a period of a maximum of twelve months due to maternity leave of the substantive post holder. The fixed term contract status of the post holder will be reviewed in accordance with the Trust's legal obligations regarding fixed term contracts and statutory maternity provisions.

Please also note any secondment must first be agreed with your current line manager.
