Job description

We have an opportunity for a Structural Bioinformatician who is interested in protein domains and functional annotations. You'll join the Velankar team at EMBL-EBI on a collaborative project between PDBe, the SCOP team at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB). In this role you will create and improve biological data processing pipelines, perform data analysis, and contribute to developing web applications. We are looking for someone creative, curious, and ambitious with a drive to tackle impactful biological data analysis problems.

The Velankar team maintains macromolecular structure databases that form essential resources for biologists and other life-scientists worldwide. PDBe is a founding partner of the Worldwide wwPDB; wwpdb.orghttp://wwPDB; wwpdb.org, which maintains the global archive of 3D structural data on macromolecules. The PDBe team consists of an international and inter-disciplinary team (data curators, bioinformaticians, scientific software developers and IT specialists).

Your role

This will be a scientific technical role where you will collaborate with developers and curators from PDBe and other resources to enhance domain assignment and other tools. This is a fantastic opportunity to help help improve and further automate structural annotations. Additionally you will contribute to designing and implementing key web pages under the umbrella of PDBe-KB that will focus on aggregating structural data. To be successful its likely that you will have an experimental, innovation-driven mindset and enjoy investigating the best approaches towards annotation automation.

You have
  • MSc or PhD in bioinformatics or related fields
  • A proven track record of data analysis using Python libraries
  • Experience in protein domain analysis
  • Experience in creating data pipelines
  • Proficiency in Python3+
  • Knowledge of PDB data formats
  • Excellent written and oral English skills
You might also have
  • Scientific publications
  • Knowledge of front-end development with experience in HTML5, CSS3, JS/TS
  • Experience with programmatic access frameworks (e.g. FastAPI)
  • Experience in presenting scientific themes at conferences and/or workshops
Contract Duration

This position is a grant/project-limited fixed-term contract until March 2027.

Salary

Grade 5, monthly salary from £3,303.40 after tax plus financial allowances depending on family circumstances. (Excluding personal pension and insurance contributions).
