Job description

World-changing careers, enabled by Johnson Matthey. With more than 200 years history, join us and help to accelerate the transition to net-zero! As the Biocatalysis Researcher, you'll contribute to JM's mission as a world leader in sustainable technology, transforming energy and reducing carbon emissions for a cleaner, brighter future.

We are seeking someone to conduct research on the application of bio-catalysis, aiming at implementing them in the synthesis of APIs and other fine chemicals.

You will provide support to research projects that generate new products, processes and understanding of commercial value to JM whilst building fundamental understanding of the science involved.

You will work with guidance to a generally defined project plan; evidence of working independently within area of expertise typically with a daily/weekly focus.

As the Biocatalysis Researcher, you will help drive our goals by:
  • Discover, characterise and evaluate novel enzymes for organic synthesis
  • Clone and express recombinant DNA using advanced molecular biology techniques
  • Utilise various expression systems (e.g. E.coli, yeast) to achieve high titers of functional proteins
  • Characterise enzymes using standard biochemical assays (e.g., activity assays, protein quantification)
  • Provide support to projects for customers, internal R&D biocatalytic projects and bio-catalysis development
  • Conduct work requiring independent judgement in the evaluation, selection, adaptation and modification of standard techniques, processes and criteria relating to the development and application of biocatalysis
Key skills that will help you succeed in this role
  • BSc in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or equivalent experience
  • Perform routine protein expression in E.coli or yeast cells for use in biocatalytic applications
  • Experience in cloning, expression of protein
  • Desirable assay method development and validation using chromatographic equipment such as HPLC/UPLC/GC and UV/Vis spectrophotometer
  • Good aseptic culture technique
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate with varied audiences effectively
  • Be self-motivated with strong problem-solving skills and excellent attention

Graduates considered with relevant under grad experience

Lab based role 5 days a week onsite

Even if you only match some of the skills, we'd love to hear from you to discuss further!
