Job description

We're looking for a BI Developer to join the Child Maintenance Service (CMS) Data Team within DWP Digital. You'll be part of a multidisciplinary team responsible for delivering the reporting, dashboards and data products that help CMS improve services and make evidence-based decisions that support children and families across the UK.

As a BI Developer, you'll use modern technologies including Power BI, SQL and cloud-based data platforms to create high-quality reporting solutions for operational teams, analysts and senior stakeholders. You'll play a key role in transforming complex data into actionable insight, helping colleagues identify trends, manage risks and improve service delivery.

This is a unique opportunity to join a team investing heavily in modern data capabilities, including the migration of existing solutions to cloud technologies. You'll work alongside data engineers, analysts and delivery specialists in an environment where your work will have a direct impact on both organisational performance and the lives of the people who rely on our services.

The scale of what we do is extraordinary, and our purpose is unique. We'd love you to join us.

What skills, knowledge and experience will you need?
  • Strong experience developing dashboards, reports and visualisations using Power BI.
  • Experience using SQL and Python to analyse, transform and work with large and complex datasets.
  • Ability to investigate complex technical or data issues and find effective solutions.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to build relationships and explain technical issues clearly to non-technical colleagues.
  • Good understanding of data engineering principles, with experience supporting and developing less experienced team members through coaching or mentoring
You and your role

As a BI Developer you'll help shape how the Child Maintenance Service uses data to make better decisions, improve operational performance and deliver better outcomes for the children and families who rely on its services. Your dashboards and reporting products will provide critical insight to operational teams, analysts and senior leaders, helping them understand what's happening across the service and where improvements can be made.

Working within a cross-functional team of around 30, you'll contribute to the design and delivery of robust, scalable reporting solutions. You'll have the autonomy to take ownership of your products throughout their lifecycle, from initial requirements and development through to optimisation, support and continuous improvement.

A significant part of your role will involve developing and maintaining interactive Power BI dashboards and reports, ensuring data is accurate, accessible and provides real business value. You'll help monitor and maintain datasets, improve performance, troubleshoot issues and ensure stakeholders have access to reliable information when they need it most.

You'll also contribute to the team's wider transformation agenda as it continues its journey towards modern cloud-based technologies. Working with tools across the existing and strategic data platform, you'll have opportunities to broaden your technical expertise while helping deliver innovative solutions that support one of the most important public services in government.
