Job summary

ALS in Prescot is seeking a Laboratory Manager for the Base Metals department. The role leads lab personnel, ensures ISO 17025 and UKAS compliance, and drives safety, quality and efficiency across daily operations.

Responsibilities include resource planning, workflow management and staff development to sustain high-quality outputs and continuous improvement in a fast-paced lab environment.

Qualifications

• Degree in Chemistry or Applied Chemistry or related discipline or equivalent (HNC/HND).
• Experience leading a small laboratory team.
• Minimum 5 years in lab operations with analytical equipment.
• Knowledge of ISO 17025 requirements.
• Experience leading, managing and developing people.
• Strong organisational and prioritisation skills.
• GCSE English and Maths or equivalent.
• Good IT skills including Microsoft Office.
• Commitment to equal opportunities.

• Lead, manage and develop laboratory personnel, fostering accountability and continuous improvement.
• Oversee departmental activities to ensure ISO17025, UKAS, quality and safety compliance.
• Manage workflow and departmental performance to meet customer and business needs.
• Allocate resources to support safe, efficient lab operations.
• Monitor performance and implement corrective actions as needed.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance quality and productivity.
• Provide training, competency assessments and development for all staff.
• Promote a strong quality culture across the department.
• Manage non-conformances, risks and opportunities for improvement.
• Support maintenance of analytical equipment and lab systems.
