Bank Specialist Physiotherapist (Rotational) Band 6

This is an exciting time to be working at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation one of the biggest NHS Trusts in the UK, delivering care to more than 2 million people a year through our four main hospitals: Barnet, Chase Farm and Royal Free and most recently the North Middlesex Hospital. Our focus is very much on Quality Improvement through innovation.

We are delighted to be looking for physiotherapists to join our pool of bank staff at the Royal Free Hampstead site. Our diverse range of specialties offers physiotherapists the unique opportunity to develop a wide range of knowledge and skills. They will work alongside highly experienced clinicians in all the areas and be part of an integrated multi-disciplinary workforce. All post holders will be expected to deliver patient focused, evidence based, high quality therapy service across relevant clinical services.

Successful candidates ae required to be able to demonstrate the Trust values, the specific responsibilities of the job description and to meet the person specification. You should have proven experience of working in an acute hospital setting.

Main duties of the job

1.To provide a high standard of specialist physiotherapy service to a widerange of Physiotherapy in-patients. This post consists of 9 monthlyrotations in the following clinical areas:

  • Health Services for Elderly People. (HSEP)
  • Rapid Response ( A+E and acute medicine )
  • Oncology
  • Respiratory
  • General surgery and Liver Transplantation
  • Renal
  • Vascular Surgery and Amputees.

2.To assess and treat own caseload of patients as an autonomous andindependent practitioner for patients who may have acute, chronic and/or complex presentation, and maintain appropriate treatment plans, recordsand statistics.

3.To participate in the weekend and on call rota.

4.Supervise and teach junior therapists, students and assistants.

5.To be involved in the teaching of the multidisciplinary team (MDT), staffand patient education groups.

6. Undertake and present evidence-based projects and research including departmental audit and suggesting practice changes, under thesupervision of line supervisor.

7.To take an active role in own continuing professional development.

8.To deputise for team leaders as requested for the day-to-day running of a service.

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

1.To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own work, including clinical practice, and for the work and clinical practice of line-managed staff.

2.To carry out assessment of patients as an autonomous practitioner includingcomplex or chronic presentations, using a high level of clinical reasoning skills and integrating specialist knowledge of evidence-based practice.

3.To undertake advanced, comprehensive, and where applicable, standardised assessments within a specialised field, looking at all occupational performance including self-maintenance, productivity and leisure, for patients with diverse or complex presentations/multi pathologies.

4.To be able to establish priority, determine needs and initiate a specialist treatment plan for patients referred for physiotherapy using judgement of highly complex facts or situations, which require the analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of options.

RESPONSIBILITIES FOR PATIENTS

1.To communicate effectively with patients, carers and other professionals on an individual or group basis to maximise rehabilitation potential and ensureunderstanding of condition, which will frequently require flexible verbal and non-verbal communication skills including: motivation persuasion explanation of complex issues and negotiation

2.To demonstrate flexibility in communication and interpersonal skills to overcome barriers to communication such as: dysfunctional illness beliefs altered perception and cognition loss of hearing/sight language and cultural barriers distressing information e.g. Victims of torture/abuse environmental e.g., lack of privacy, excess noise hostile, antagonistic and highly emotive situations controversial and/or highly complex information long-term illness/dysfunction and/or uncertain prognosis.

3.To occasionally convey information, particularly in highly complex, contentious and emotive situations, which may be beyond the scope of more junior staff, which may require more developed communication skills.

4.To communicate complex patient related information effectively, to ensurecollaborative working with the multi-disciplinary team members across health and social care sectors ensuring the delivery of a co-ordinated multidisciplinary service.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR POLICY AND SERVICE DEVELOPMENT

1.To have knowledge and understanding of a variety of cultural backgrounds and beliefs to respect individuals rights and dignity.

2.To provide legal and disability reports as required with the support of the Lead Therapist.

3.To demonstrate a sound understanding of Clinical Governance and RiskManagement appropriate to the work situation.

4.To contribute to improvements in service delivery and clinical practice, including integrated care pathway development and clinical networks.

Person Specification
Education & Qualifications
  • Degree/ graduate diploma or equivalent in Physiotherapy
  • Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration as a physiotherapist
  • Certificated graduate courses or equivalent in-house training in clinical specialty areas.
  • Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP)
  • Membership of special interest group

  • Good understanding of relevant clinical guidelines.
  • Broad range of clinical experience at a Band 5 level or above
  • Experience of working in an acute, hospital-based setting, including working within an MDT
