Job summary

Spire Bushey Hospital seeks a proactive Respiratory Physiologist to join the Outpatient Department on a flexible/ bank contract. You will perform and interpret a full range of respiratory tests, support diagnosis and care planning, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure high-quality patient outcomes.

Applicants should have BTEC OR equivalent in Medical Physics and Physiological Measurement, and experience as a Respiratory/Clinical Physiologist.

Qualifications

• BTEC Ordinary National Certificate in Medical Physics and Physiological Measurement or equivalent.
• Experience as a Respiratory or Clinical Physiologist.
• Competent in performing and interpreting a broad range of respiratory investigations.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a patient-centred approach.
• Strong organisational skills and ability to manage a varied caseload.
• Awareness of health and safety, infection prevention practices and clinical standards.
• IT literate and comfortable using clinical systems and Microsoft Office applications.

Responsibilities

• Performing and interpreting a full range of routine respiratory investigations.
• Conducting Full Pulmonary Function Tests including spirometry, DLCO, body plethysmography and FeNO testing.
• Assessing patients and obtaining relevant clinical information to support diagnosis and planning.
• Explain procedures to patients, obtain consent and provide reassurance.
• Monitor patient wellbeing during procedures and respond to concerns.
• Document results accurately and communicate findings to the clinical team.
• Maintain patient records and ensure equipment calibration and infection control standards.
• Support service development through quality improvement initiatives and team collaboration.

Spire Bushey Hospital forms part of a 4 site portfolio, and is supported by and works alongside Spire Bushey Diagnostic Centre, Elstree Cancer Centre and Spire Pathology Centre - based on Centennial Park in Elstree - just 5 minutes from the main hospital site.

Duties and responsibilities (not limited):

• Performing and interpreting a full range of routine respiratory investigations.
• Conducting Full Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs) including:
  • Slow Spirometry
  • Forced Spirometry
  • Gas Transfer Testing (DLCO)
  • Body Plethysmography (Body Box)
  • Respiratory Muscle Strength Testing (MIP/MEP and SNIP)
  • Bronchodilator Reversibility Testing
  • Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO) Testing
  • Six Minute Walk Tests
• Assessing patients and obtaining relevant clinical information to support diagnosis and treatment planning.
• Explaining procedures clearly to patients, obtaining informed consent and providing reassurance throughout the investigation process.
• Monitoring patient wellbeing during diagnostic procedures and responding appropriately to any complications or concerns.
• Interpreting and documenting test results accurately, communicating significant findings to the wider clinical team as required.
• Maintaining accurate patient records in line with departmental, clinical and regulatory requirements.
• Ensuring all respiratory diagnostic equipment is maintained, calibrated, quality assured and compliant with infection prevention and control standards.
• Supporting the continuous development of respiratory services through quality improvement initiatives and service enhancements.
• Working collaboratively with consultants, nursing teams and multidisciplinary colleagues to deliver excellent patient outcomes.
• Promoting best practice, patient safety, equality and dignity in all aspects of care delivery.

Who we're looking for?

• BTEC Ordinary National Certificate in Medical Physics and Physiological Measurement (or equivalent qualification).
• Previous experience working as a Respiratory or Clinical Physiologist.
• Competent in performing and interpreting a broad range of respiratory diagnostic investigations.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a compassionate and patient-centred approach.
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage a varied caseload effectively.
• Awareness of relevant professional standards, health and safety requirements and infection prevention practices.
• IT literate and comfortable using clinical systems and Microsoft Office applications.
