Your role

As a Bank Registered Mental Health Nurse, you will increase your skill set by working with multidisciplinary teams to deliver all aspects of patient care.

Key responsibilities
  • The postholder will be responsible for delivering care to people with mental health issues who are receiving inpatient care in an acute physical health setting, often on a 1:1 basis
  • Support all clinical areas of the Trust as required
  • Take personal responsibility and accountability for following Trust and local policies and procedures and for duties in accordance with the NMC code
  • Be responsible for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care
  • Take responsibility for the supervision and guidance of other staff including health care assistants and students as required
Requirements and qualifications
  • Hold RMN Registration with current NMC license to practice
  • Have relevant experience within the last 18-24 months (newly qualified nurses require 15 months post qualification experience: 3 months preceptorship and 12 months appropriate experience)
  • Have a drive to work hard, enthusiasm and the ability to commit to a four-day induction programme if successful
  • Have right to work in the UK (with relevant Adaptation/ONP if applicable)
  • Be able to commence work within 3 months of offer

Typical duties and expectations
  • Maintain the standards of professionalism expected of a registered nurse and work to the standards described within the NMC code of conduct
  • Organise and participate in delivering high standards of evidence-based nursing care
  • Carry out planned, direct patient care to a high standard without direct supervision in accordance with established nursing procedures and policies
  • Work with the patient care plan and escalate concerns appropriately
  • Support patients with mental health concerns, monitor fluctuations in mental wellbeing, and respond accordingly
  • Report significant changes in a patient’s condition to the multidisciplinary team
  • Advocate for patients experiencing mental health concerns in an acute setting and promote parity of esteem
  • Assist in health promotion by providing education, support and advice and ensure referrals to appropriate professionals or agencies as required
  • Ensure safe ordering, administration and custody of patients’ medication according to Trust policies
  • In the absence of senior staff, delegate and supervise appropriate work to other qualified staff, HCAs and students
  • Assist in coordinating discharge planning with the multidisciplinary team when relevant
  • Be responsible for admission, assessment and preparation of patients undergoing treatment or investigations when relevant
  • Escort patients to other wards or departments as required
  • Treat patients with courtesy at all times, respect individual needs and maintain confidentiality
  • Liaise effectively with other disciplines or departments as appropriate
  • Act in emergency situations and be familiar with emergency procedures including fire and resuscitation; support and direct junior staff in line with Trust policy
  • Ensure a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, relatives, visitors and colleagues
  • Ensure readiness for use of special equipment and availability of nursing supplies with senior ward nurses
  • Ensure safe custody of patients’ valuables and property according to Trust policies
  • Report and document complaints, incidents, or accidents and complete relevant documentation
  • Report and document any broken or damaged equipment according to Trust policy
  • Have detailed knowledge of Manual Handling regulations and ensure manual handling needs are assessed and followed by junior staff and students
