Job description

To provide a full range of high‑quality direct patient support services throughout the Trust, ensuring the team’s quality standards and service delivery expectations are consistently achieved. The Patient Services Assistant (PSA) role is part of the Estates and Facilities Division and combines traditional ancillary support services such as patient portering and domestic cleaning to enhance patient experience and improve patient flow.

Responsibilities
  • Manage duties required in each shift and deliver the service quickly without compromising quality.
  • Respond promptly to requests for deep cleans and isolation discharge cleans.
  • Participate in service‑improvement events and support change initiatives.
  • Perform all allocated tasks within the allotted time and maintain high quality standards.
  • Contribute to maintaining a safe working environment for self and the zonal team.
  • Carry out duties in accordance with hospital policies, guidelines and relevant legislation, including Infection Control procedures.
  • Ensure all cleaning standards are maintained to reduce the risk of hospital‑acquired infections.
  • Seek necessary information and order supplies to perform the role competently and safely.
  • Report incidents and injuries to the appropriate officer promptly.
  • Attend all mandatory training and other relevant training required by the role.
  • Contribute to effective communication, facilitating teamwork and cooperation within the zone team, ward/unit and with other departments.
  • Use radio, phone, bleep, computer or other devices, following the Trust’s information governance guidelines.
  • Move/transport patients safely from one location to another, including pushing and pulling wheelchairs, beds or trolleys using established safe methods.
  • Perform all cleaning tasks – wards, clinics, sanitary areas, offices and communal spaces.
  • Safely relocate beds and other furniture, and decontaminate them as required.
  • Move deceased patients in a sensitive manner.
  • Deliver and collect patient meal trolleys and medical gas canisters.
  • Remove dirty curtains and hang fresh clean curtains, using ladders where necessary.
  • Buff, scrub and redress floors; perform carpet cleaning using appropriate machinery.
  • Work as a member of a team to provide effective patient support services to a zoned area.
  • Contribute to the unit’s quality plan and operational functioning.
  • Co‑ordinate emergency and contingency actions, including fire evacuation and helicopter support.
  • Take reasonable care of oneself and consider how one’s actions affect others and the Trust.
  • Assist with the orientation and induction of new staff.
Qualifications
  • Level 2 qualification in English and Maths.
  • Proven ability to understand and comply with detailed procedures and retain information.
  • Proven ability to organise and prioritise own workload and follow written instructions.
  • Proven ability to adapt to new ideas, knowledge and skills while remaining flexible.
  • Ability to take instructions.
  • Proven ability to keep information confidential.
Desirable Criteria
  • Previous experience of working with patients or clients.
  • Previous cleaning, and/or portering experience.
  • Actively seeks to develop professionally.
