Job description
Overview

The post holder will be responsible for providing a safe, efficient and effective imaging and Breast Mammography service for the Trust and South Essex Screening service in accordance with Screening and Trust protocols. They will ensure a high‑quality Mammography service is maintained at all times.

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust serves a population of 1.2 million people through Broomfield, Chelmsford, Basildon and Southend. With a workforce of approximately 15 000 staff our aim is to deliver excellent local and specialist services and to improve health and wellbeing.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the superintendent in organising staff and workload to maintain adequate staffing and respond to demand.
  • Demonstrate expertise in Breast Imaging techniques by promoting best practice, continuing education and peer support.
  • Organise and coordinate staff rotating through the mammography rooms.
  • Supervise and advise newly qualified, junior radiographers, undergraduate students and assistant practitioners.
  • Undertake screening responsibilities and justify imaging clients above the current upper age limit as self‑referrals.
  • Work on mobile screening vans, exercising own initiative, making clinical decisions, acting on QA information and liaising with host mobile site staff for supplies.
  • Relay important, detailed and sometimes difficult information to patients and other health professionals.
  • Rapidly assess patient personality type, elicit relevant clinical history within time, explain the procedure, gain consent, inform and advise the patient.
  • Operate in accordance with NICE guidelines and quality standards inline with Trust policy.
  • Produce mammograms of optimum quality across a broad range of imaging techniques while maintaining a quality experience for the clients and adhering to time constraints.
  • When x‑raying the breast, be aware of the very sensitive nature of the examination and have empathy with the vulnerability of the patient/client.
  • Maintain a safe, efficient and high standard of radiography and ensure compliance with IRR99 and IR(ME)R2000 legislation and radiation local rules for self, patients, staff and public.
  • Lead the provision of radiographic technique for stereotactic biopsy and guidewire localisation prior to surgery.
  • Competently perform assessment clinic techniques and achieve and maintain competence in breast imaging and stereotactic procedures.
  • Plan, prepare and organise mobile van clinics, manage pre‑appointed client store within optimal visit time and ensure mobile units are returned to the base unit.
  • Be prepared for fainting, tears or any medical emergency and be aware of emergency procedures when working off site on the mobile van.
  • Ensure patient welfare and needs are attended to at all times and ensure patient care is maximum benefit.
  • Maintain hygiene, cleanliness, deal with bodily fluids and dirty linen and keep equipment records and quality assurance of mammography equipment.
  • Supervise and participate in the training of undergraduate radiographers, trainee assistant practitioners and newly qualified/junior radiographers within the clinical setting.
  • Support assistant practitioners, check resulting mammograms and act at all times in accordance with the HCPC code of conduct.
  • Maintain professional credibility, be aware of current research and information, assist in formulation and updating of policies/protocols for Trust approval and actively support clinical colleagues in implementing new practices when necessary.
  • Implement national guidance and changes to professional radiographic practice, peer review images to maintain high competence and actively participate in departmental audits including QMS.
  • Ensure appropriate use, storage and daily maintenance of expensive X‑ray equipment, maintain accuracy of input to computer records, and ensure safe environment for all users by complying with COSHH, Health & Safety policies and infection control policies.
  • Report clinical and non‑clinical incidents, complaints, near misses and serious untoward incidents according to Trust protocols and maintain consumables stock levels within allocated work area, including mobile units.
  • Ensure effective use of resources at all times, safe use of all radiographic equipment, involvement in care, maintenance, repair and quality assurance of equipment in mammography and keep records of such.
  • Work to agreed advanced clinical skill level, adhere to Trust and departmental policies, provide professional supervision, guidance and training to all junior members and continuously maintain & update own professional development and demonstrate an active interest in CPD.
  • Assist in promoting a learning environment within the division by maintaining a evidence‑based and ongoing CPD portfolio and demonstrating an active commitment to improving standards of service and quality of work.
  • Develop skills and expertise in specialised areas in line with the Personal and comply with local rules regarding the computerised collection of radiation dose measurement for patient examinations.
  • Competent on the Radiology Information System Soliton: record all details of patients’ examinations after training, know and understand the National Breast Screening Service database, interpret and enter patient data accurately, apply clinical governance rules, report causes for concern and remediate them.
  • Ensure the maintenance of high standards of patient care and professional standards throughout the area of responsibility, respond to patient feedback (friends, family, satisfaction surveys), accurately maintain computer records of patient attendance, ensure all radiographic examinations are registered and completed on the RIS, NHS BSP databases and images stored in line with data protection principles.
  • Attend and participate in health promotion days for the community and the unit, make sure information leaflets are available for distribution and update them when necessary, and ensure patient confidentiality at all times, adhering to Caldicott and the Data Protection act.
  • Be responsible for Information Governance on the screening van.
