Bank Endoscopy Staff Nurse

Core Responsibilities
  • Access, plan, implement, evaluate, holistic, high quality and individualised care which respects patient personal dignity and beliefs
  • Maintain a safe working environment for patients, visitors and staff
  • Maintain and promote effective communication within the care team and with colleagues, patients, relatives and visitors
  • Act as a mentor to students and newly qualified staff including teaching and assessing, within their realm of competence, upholding the philosophy of evidence based practice
  • Assist in the management of the ward budget and ensure appropriate stock levels are maintained, advising of any shortfalls and taking action appropriate to their level of expertise.
  • Maintain a professional profile and develop skills, knowledge and competencies adhering to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and Trust Policies and Procedures

Job responsibilities
  • Communication
    • High level of communication skills required to deal with an anxious patient
    • High level of communication skills required to deal with distressing / challenging situations
    • Communication includes management of a list, keeping the flow of the patients going appropriately, and assessing the appropriateness off the procedure for each patient and communicating this to staff in the room and other Endoscopy staff numbers.
  • Clinical Duties
    • As a highly specialist nurse to carry out pre, peri and post endoscopy care for patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures
    • Duties to include:
    • To be technically competent and clinically effective in assisting with Endoscopic diagnostic and complex therapeutic procedures.
    • Assisting the Endoscopist during each procedure to ensure appropriate equipment is available.
    • Taking biopsies, ensuring correct labels and proper/safe transfer of specimens
    • Assessing, developing and implementing patient care pathways and evaluating care given, ensuring legibility and accuracy of nursing records, to be aware of legal implications of these documents.
    • To assist and supervise new members of staff, (including staff nurses, HCAs, and students). To ensure that all staff work to and achieve an acceptable safe standard and quality of care.
    • Demonstrate effective communication with all staff ensuring dissemination and exchange of information. Ensure good communications exist between all health care professionals to promote harmonious working relationships and safe working practices.
    • To act as advocate to patients ensuring continuity of care for all patients undergoing an endoscopic procedure.
    • Recording of observations
    • Care of both the sedated and non-sedated patient.
    • IV Access
    • Recovery post procedure.
    • Safe discharge of patients.
    • Ensure policies are adhered to in the event of post endoscopic complications.
    • To ensure all drug administration is covered in accordance with legal and Trust Policies and Procedures. Also, to ensure the safe custody, storage and control of all drugs used within the endoscopy unit.
    • To be fully competent in the decontamination and disinfection of endoscopes and accessories, including the safe handling and storage of equipment.
    • To regularly calculate the daily scope requirements for the endoscopy lists and prepare the clinical areas, accordingly, ensuring consistency and competence of all new/junior staff.
    • To be responsible for the maintenance of endoscopy equipment, ensuring that all staff adhere to security and health and safety protocols when handling broken equipment.
    • To be fully competent in the event of an emergency delegating as appropriate. Ensuring patient safety at all times.
  • Financial and Physical Resources
    • To comply with financial instructions of the Trust
  • Staff Management
    • To work with the Endoscopy Unit Sister contributing towards recruitment processes, induction, appraisal and personal development planning.
    • Lead and support medical and nursing colleagues to ensure that high standards of clinical practice and quality of care are achieved and maintained
    • To facilitate out of hours patient line for minor problems and general enquires post twenty-four hours from procedure for all outpatients
    • To assist in the smooth running of clinical areas within the endoscopy unit regularly reporting any occurrences to Senior staff.
    • Be flexible in staffing situations and assisting the Senior staff in other areas as required.
    • Regularly participate in department meetings to enhance team communication.
