About the role

Provide expert diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy (gastroscopy, colonoscopy & or flexible sigmoidoscopy) independently on sedated and non-sedated patients at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle and West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven. Perform endoscopy on sedated and non-sedated patients to meet local and national targets, and provide flexible cover for endoscopy lists across both acute hospitals as required.

Key responsibilities
  • Take clinical responsibility to decide on endoscopic findings and histopathology results, considering patient health, comorbidities and pathology.
  • Order and interpret further investigations as required, initiating treatment plans and discharge back to referring doctor/GP.
  • Impart clinical judgments, including breaking bad news to patients.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and carers to deliver complex and sensitive information with tact and empathy.
  • Accept direct referrals from multidisciplinary team members between primary and secondary care.
  • Refer patients to hospital consultants and other team members as appropriate.
  • Support endoscopy services to maintain high quality, measured by the global rating scale (GRS) for endoscopy.
  • Operate and ensure safe use of specialised equipment for diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.
  • Work in accordance with the NMC code of professional conduct and relevant guidelines.
