Job description
Overview

Our catering assistants are responsible for the preparation of foodstuffs, general cleaning of equipment and the areas within the Catering Department and the preparation and service of food to patients on the ward or to patients, visitors and staff in the dining room. This role is part of Northumbria Healthcare Facilities Management (NHFM)’s staff bank which provides 24/7 support across multiple hospital sites.

Key Responsibilities
  • Receipt, checking for quality, temperature and correct quantity as per order to suppliers and storage of goods in the appropriate area within the time limits set out in the department policy on HACCP.
  • Serve food to staff and check temperature levels, being aware of Food Temperature Regulations.
  • Operate the central dish wash machine, cleaning, drying and checking of staff/ward crockery and cutlery.
  • Prepare vegetables, fruits and salads.
  • Prepare and dispatch meals.
  • Serve food in ward areas.
  • Serve food in the Dining Room and associated areas and prepare sandwiches, hot snacks and beverages where applicable.
  • Clean and re-stack vending machines.
  • Operate the Staff Dining Room cash register.
  • Maintain an appropriate image and appearance to suit service needs.
  • Be self‑reliant.
  • Be flexible in working arrangements to cover for holidays and sickness and work all areas of the Catering Department when required.
  • Clean premises and equipment to the required standard.
  • Ensure compliance with the Food Hygiene Policy and the Codes of Practice.
  • Work in a manner that does not contravene health and safety procedures of the Hospital and the Hotel Services Department.
  • Participate in training programmes relevant to efficiency, hygiene, fire drills, the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and other courses as needed.
  • Keep duties flexible; tasks may be revised in consultation with the post holder.
Requirements

• Successful applicants must pay for their own DBS certificate (salary deduction from the first monthly pay).
• Minimum two shifts per month, with the option to take on more shifts if desired.
• Willingness to work across various areas of the catering department.

Benefits & Working Hours

The staff bank offers flexible working arrangements. Typical hourly pay is £12.51, increasing to £22.90 on Sundays or public holidays. Attendance of a minimum of two shifts per month is expected.
