Job description
Overview

The post holder will manage and lead the specialist psychology service for ENT patients under the care of the Royal Free London NHS Trust, consistent with the World Class Care values and objectives of the Trust. This includes clinical supervision and day-to-day management (line management) of any psychological staff in this specialist service (e.g., trainee clinical or counselling psychologists). The post holder will directly provide a psychology service to ENT patients, delivering highly specialist psychological assessments, formulations and treatments, complex risk assessments and advice on care where psychological aspects are relevant, and offering advice and consultation on clients\' psychological care to non-psychologist colleagues and to other carers, working autonomously within professional guidelines and the service\'s policies and procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Provide expert knowledge and guidance regarding psychological issues relating to the care of people under the ENT speciality.
  • Conduct highly specialist psychological assessments of ENT patients using a range of data sources, including psychological self-report measures, rating scales, structured observations, and semi-structured interviews with patients, families and other professionals.
  • Formulate plans for psychological treatment and/or management drawing on conceptual frameworks and evidence-based methods across care settings and physical health problems.
  • Make highly skilled evaluations and decisions about treatment options, considering theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors related to history and physical ill-health or cognitive changes.
  • Implement or support access to a range of psychological interventions for individuals or groups where distress, co-morbidities or cognitive functioning affect engagement with care and rehabilitation or relationships with the care system.
  • Ensure that psychological interventions contribute to a coherent and optimal package of care.

Qualifications and Experience
  • Education & Qualifications – Post-graduate doctoral level training (or equivalent) in clinical counselling or health psychology as accredited by the British Psychological Society, or British Psychological Society Statement of Equivalence; HCPC registration and eligibility for Practitioner Psychologist status; post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice.
  • Experience – Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings (community, primary care, outpatient and inpatient); experience with diverse client groups across life course and clinical severity; post-qualification supervised clinical experience in therapeutic intervention and management of adults with long-term physical health problems; experience in interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary environments; experience delivering interventions to individuals, groups and/or families; experience teaching, training and/or supervision of other qualified professionals; experience applying psychology across different cultural contexts; experience leading case conferences or family meetings.
  • Skills & Aptitudes – Ability to use complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management; knowledge of at least two relevant theoretical models and interventions; strong written and oral communication; ability to provide consultation; doctoral-level knowledge of research methodology and data analysis; knowledge of relevant legislation; commitment to continuing professional development; supervision of other psychologists; ability to work well in a multidisciplinary setting; knowledge of specialised therapies for difficult-to-treat groups.
  • Desirable – Familiarity with SPSS or similar statistical packages; experience in service development, leadership and management.
  • Personal Qualities – Ability to teach and train others using multimedia materials for presentations in public, professional and academic settings; alignment with Royal Free World Class Values.
