Job Summary

We are seeking a Specialist Palliative Care Nurse to join our community team at an exciting time of development. This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone passionate about palliative care and looking to contribute to how specialist services can support the NHS 10-Year Plan.

The role involves working alongside a talented, dedicated team to provide the highest quality specialist palliative care, supporting patients, families and carers across Carlisle and Penrith, with occasional support across North Cumbria or at secondary care sites.

In addition to clinical duties, the post includes operational management of staff and caseloads, requiring strong organisational and leadership skills, alongside a sound knowledge of the governance agenda to ensure our patients are safe.

This role offers the chance to develop specialist skills, make a tangible difference in patients' lives, and contribute to the evolution of specialist palliative care across the region.

Main Duties
  • Provide expert assessment, planning, and delivery of specialist palliative and end‑of‑life care.
  • Lead and manage a team, including caseload allocation, supervision, and operational management.
  • Ensure clinical governance, risk management, and patient safety standards are met.
  • Mentor and educate staff, patients, families and the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Contribute to service development, quality improvement and strategic initiatives.
  • Collaborate effectively across teams and sites to ensure continuity of care.

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Teaching qualification
  • Highly advanced communication skills training/qualification from a recognised body
  • Post‑registration qualification in palliative care
  • Evidence of recent study at Masters/post‑graduate/Highly specialist level in relevant area
Desirable
  • Non‑medical prescribing independent prescriber course V300
  • Community nurse prescriber V100 or V150
Knowledge
  • Highly developed specialist knowledge in the relevant field
  • Demonstrable advanced clinical skills within specialist area, including physical assessment skills and basic life support
  • Ability to obtain and evaluate information to aid decision making and to develop others in this area
