University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust
We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 7 Biomedical Scientist to join the Point of Care Team at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) Birmingham, one of the largest teaching hospitals in England comprising four main hospital sites: Queen Elizabeth, Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull Hospital. The successful candidate will be expected to work across all sites on a 12‑month fixed‑term contract working 37.5 hours per week.
We are looking to appoint a highly motivated and enthusiastic HCPC registered Senior Biomedical Scientist, holding a relevant master’s degree or recognised equivalent. The candidate should have a sound theoretical and practical knowledge of POCT with a minimum of three years’ experience working in UK laboratories.
This busy department delivers POCT services in all clinical areas of the Trust and in nearby community centres. The post holder will support the expanding POCT service and manage several different POCT devices, ensuring they meet governance requirements for a safe and quality‑led service. The department actively promotes innovation and development, working towards UKAS accreditation.
The role requires working both independently and as part of a team, with a common goal of providing high‑standard service to patients. The candidate will need knowledge and understanding of Point of Care Testing within the NHS environment, and will be expected to support breath test clinics managed by POCT. Flexibility to work across the sites is required.
You will be responsible for the day‑to‑day management of a wide variety of POCT devices across all four sites. This includes offering specialist advice to staff and service users, first‑line staff management (rostering, training, performance management) and representation at relevant cross‑site meetings.
You will collaborate with the service management team, associate practitioners and other senior biomedical scientists in POCT. You will manage devices, perform appraisals and other HR/workforce duties, requiring strong communication and interpersonal skills.
You must have knowledge of all aspects of health and safety associated with laboratory procedures, a keen eye for detail and a desire to expand and develop the service. You should be committed to providing high standard service to patients, enthusiastic about staff training and laboratory quality, and have good understanding of legislation, regulation and compliance with ISO 15189:2012.
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and requires a submission for Disclosure to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly the CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
