Band 6 to Band 7 Progression Pharmacist

Are you an ambitious pharmacist looking to accelerate your career? We are recruiting Rotational Pharmacists for our Band 6 to Band 7 Progression Pathway at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. This structured programme offers a unique opportunity to develop your clinical, operational, and leadership skills across multiple specialties, supported by expert mentors and a clear progression framework.

You will join one of the UK's largest and most dynamic pharmacy departments, working across five world-renowned hospitals and benefiting from strong regional training links through the Structured Training and Experience for Pharmacists (STEP) programme.

Main duties of the job

This programme builds on the knowledge, skills and experience gained at foundation level and empowers pharmacists to take an active role in their professional development through structured experiential learning.

Through the programme you will:

  • Deliver safe and effective clinical pharmacy services, including medicines optimisation and supporting high standards of patient care.
  • Rotate through a variety of specialties such as General Medicine, Older Persons Unit, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Urology, Frailty, Integrated Local Services, Oncology, Emergency Department, and Acute Cardiology, with further opportunities to rotate across an expanding range of specialties.
  • Support operational services including dispensary, technical services, and medicines information.
  • Participate in audits, quality improvement projects, and service development initiatives.
  • Contribute to out-of-hours pharmacy services (late duty, weekends, and residency).
  • Progress through a structured framework to Band 7 by achieving defined competencies.

Job responsibilities

This programme is designed for pharmacists who are passionate about patient care and professional growth. You will:

  • Enter at a stage appropriate to your experience and progress through a structured framework to Band 7.
  • Gain experience across multiple sites, including Guys, St Thomas, Evelina London Children's Hospital, Royal Brompton, and Harefield Hospital.
  • Develop expertise in clinical practice, technical services, medicines information, and operational management.
  • Undertake postgraduate study and independent prescribing training to prepare for advanced roles.

Person Specification
Skills And Abilities
  • Demonstrable skills and ability to safely clinically screen a range of prescriptions including complex and high risk medicines.
  • Ability to communicate complex pharmaceutical information effectively to members of the MDT.
  • Able to work independently, when required.
  • Able to effectively solve own and others clinical and operational issues to best support patient care.
  • Able to manage their own workload effectively and escape for support, when required.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Able to work in, sometimes, emotionally challenging and evocative situations.
  • Able to work under pressure.
  • Experience of working with Electronic Patient Records and digital prescribing systems.
Knowledge and Experience
  • Experience of working in a dispensary / patient services environment.
  • Experience in providing clinical pharmacy services.
  • Experience of mentoring and supervising students, Trainee Pharmacists and / or Pharmacy Technicians.
  • Involvement with clinical audit, quality improvement, research and / or service development projects.
  • Experience in hospital pharmacy practice.
  • Experience of working in a ward-based clinical environment.
  • Experience working within Medicines Information or Technical Services.
Knowledge/qualifications
  • MPharm degree (or equivalent to allow GPhC registration).
  • Professional registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
  • Willingness to be or already enrolled on the UCL Postgraduate Diploma in General Pharmacy Practice (or equivalent).
  • Membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.
  • Successful completion of a Postgraduate Certificate in General Pharmacy Practice (or equivalent and comparable experience).
