Are you interested in developing your skills working with clients following a stroke or other acquired brain injuries. We are looking for enthusiastic, client centred occupational therapist who enjoys working within an interdisciplinary team and is passionate about supporting clients in achieving their goals.

Moor Green Brain Injury Unit, based within Moseley Hall Hospital, is a specialist interdisciplinary team providing an outpatient brain injury rehabilitation programme for people of working age. The emphasis is on participation as well as impairment and includes job retention support and vocational rehabilitation.

The Team comprises, Administrative staff, Speech & Language Therapists, Physiotherapists, Clinical Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, and skilled support staff. We have close links on site with BISC (Brain Injury Specialist Clinic), Birmingham Neuro Rehab Team, ESD and Community Stroke Teams, Inpatients & specialist clinics at West Midlands Rehabilitation Centre at Selly Oak.

Responsibilities

• Provide occupational therapy assessment and treatment for clients within individual and group sessions. Delivery takes place within the hospital unit, client’s home or in the community.
• Act as a key worker, co‑ordinate your client’s rehabilitation programme and their goal planning process.
• Assess clients occupational therapy needs, plan, carry out and coordinate an individual treatment plan using sound clinical reasoning skills and evidence‑based practice.
• Lead & co‑lead groups with occupational therapy and interdisciplinary colleagues e.g. fatigue management, vocational options, relaxation.
• Provide assessment and analysis of rehabilitation, social and care needs of complex clients as part of the IDT, referring on to outside agencies/professionals in discussion with senior members of staff.
• Coordinate patient’s treatment plans as a part of goal setting process.
• Act as a key worker by coordinating and leading the provision and organisation of their interdisciplinary goal‑focused rehabilitation programme. Acting as point of contact for patient, carers, and outside agencies.
• Assess and request a wide range of equipment needs making appropriate referrals or requests to relevant organisations within the region.
• Transport and fit equipment as necessary to client’s home/work/leisure area.
• Deal sensitively with client and carers/families coping with complex conditions and social situations.
• Undertake and advise on clinical risk assessments and home visits.
• Assess for, order and provide activities of daily living equipment for individual clients and to ensure safe use of equipment such as wheelchairs and manual handling devices.
• Refer to and advise services responsible for long‑term issue and maintenance of equipment as appropriate.
• Communicate complex user‑related information effectively to the interdisciplinary team, including colleagues in social care and health, education, and acute services, to ensure the delivery of a coordinated service.
• Provide informative reports and discharge summaries to GP’s, social services, outside agencies and other therapy staff in compliance with service standards.
• Keep accurate and contemporaneous clinical records in accordance with professional, departmental, divisional, and BCHC trust standards.
• Coordinate client’s rehabilitation programmes, in liaison with senior staff, to meet complex social, emotional, and physical need within an appropriate environment.
• Adhere to all departmental, divisional, BCHC trust policies and procedures.
• Professionally accountable for all aspects of own work, practising in accordance with the College of Occupational Therapist’s ‘Code of Conduct’ and the Health Professions Council ‘Standards of Proficiency’.
• Develop and maintain skills and knowledge required to practice in the field, through participation in in‑service training programmes and other Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and document in CPD portfolio.
• Reflect on and evaluate own practice using the available evidence base and outcome measures and participate in audit and research as required.
• Work autonomously, plan, manage and prioritise own caseload in co‑ordination with other IDT staff, outside agencies and services.
• Be responsible for the delegation of treatment programmes to Rehabilitation / Occupational Therapy Assistant/ Technical Instructors and other members of the IDT as required.
• Provide supervision and support the development of more junior Occupational Therapy staff and students.
• Provide cover for colleagues as necessary within the integrated group and individual programme.
• Collect appropriate statistical information.
• Contribute to professional and clinical team related meetings.
• Participate in highly specialised regular in‑service training programme.
• Critically appraise evidence and analyse clinical guidelines/standards in order to develop/maintain evidence‑based and clinically effective practice.
• Contribute to professional and clinical service development in conjunction with senior staff and the wider IDT.
• Contribute to audit research projects within the service or profession in agreement with Senior OTs, Clinical Lead and Outpatient Group Lead.
