An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly dedicated Bank 6 clinical Lead Nurse to join Swanswell Ward, one of our inpatient mental health teams based at The Caludon Centre, Coventry.

We welcome applicants who are committed to improving care for people who require inpatient mental health services and innovate practice within a ward setting. Applicants will need to have substantial post‑registration experience.

The post holder will be part of the nursing team and work a shift pattern that includes weekends and nights, ensuring a high level of quality care is maintained. The role supports the Ward Manager in all aspects of delivering safe care to the patient group, with an emphasis on maintaining quality and safety at all times.

Job Description

The post holder will be required to work within a multi‑disciplinary, age‑independent, mental health inpatient service. The post holder will ensure that all organisational systems and processes are adhered to, manage competing priorities, and navigate complex situations. They will act as a resource of clinical knowledge and competence, contributing to staff and service development, audit, guidelines and quality improvement initiatives, and ensuring the highest standards of safety and quality in their area. The role requires trusted assessments, evidence‑based clinical interventions, and clinical leadership. Operational management responsibilities and quality and safety improvement approaches will be part of the Band 6 position within inpatient care.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POST
  • Work as an integrated member of the team, meeting all service users’ needs within the unit, and hold a designated named clinician caseload.
  • Formulate and coordinate holistic assessment of mental and physical needs.
  • Act as Nurse in Charge (NIC) and manage shift duties.
  • Supervise and develop junior staff, ensuring specific role competency sign‑off for junior staff, students and trainees.
  • Ensure a robust process for care plan formulation, review, evaluation, treatment and safety plans, and report back to the multi‑professional team.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and development of the social and physical therapeutic environment.
  • Lead all areas of risk management within the ward, embedding risk assessment and ensuring trust processes are adhered to and recorded.
  • Maintain high standards of clinical care and service delivery based on evidence, clinical and professional judgement.
  • Identify needs to facilitate safe discharge.
  • Lead and coordinate adherence to and reporting of safety and quality issues, reporting any concerns immediately.
  • Have detailed working knowledge of key partnership services and organisations, including eligibility criteria and access procedures.
  • Lead and maintain a learning environment through mentorship, supervision and guidance to identified junior staff and students.
  • Lead on quality improvement and liaise with the Quality Improvement team to support practice development and coordinate staff training in improvement approaches.
  • Support staff training and development in all areas appropriate to inpatient care.
  • Lead on improving patient experience and co‑production on the ward.
  • Provide senior leadership across the acute system as deemed necessary.
