Band 6 Clinical Lead

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly dedicated Band 6 Clinical Lead Nurse to join Swanswell Ward, one of our inpatient mental health teams based at the Caludon Centre, Coventry.

We welcome applicants who are committed to improving care for people who require inpatient mental health services and innovating practice within a ward setting. Applicants will need to have substantial post registration experience.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be part of the Nursing team and work a span of duty including weekends and nights, to ensure that a high level of quality care is maintained. As part of the role you will support the Ward Manager in all aspects of delivering safe care to patient group with an emphasis on ensuring quality and safety is maintained within the ward at all times.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be required to work within a multi‑disciplinary age‑independent, mental health inpatient service. They will ensure that all organisational systems and processes are adhered to, manage and organise competing priorities and manage change in complex situations. The post holder will be a resource of clinical knowledge and competence in the service area, contributing to staff and service development, supporting audits, guidelines and quality improvement approaches to ensure the highest standards of safety and quality.

They will be required to undertake trusted assessments, provide evidence‑based clinical interventions and clinical leadership, and will be expected to gain skills in operational management responsibilities and in quality and safety improvement approaches as part of their Band 6 position within inpatient care.

Main responsibilities of the post
  • Work as an integrated member of the team, managing all service users’ needs within the unit and hold a designated named clinician caseload.
  • Formulate and coordinate holistic assessment of mental and physical needs.
  • Act as Nurse in Charge (NIC) and manage shift duties.
  • Supervise and develop junior staff members, ensuring role competency sign‑off for junior staff, students and trainees.
  • Ensure a robust process for care plan formulation, review, evaluation of treatment and safety plans, and report back to the multi‑professional team.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and development of the social and physical therapeutic environment.
  • Lead all areas of risk management within the ward, ensuring risk (including patient risk, positive risk taking, and environmental risk assessment) is embedded and that trust processes around risk are adhered to and recorded.
  • Maintain high standards of clinical care and service delivery based on evidence, clinical and professional judgement.
  • Identify needs to facilitate safe discharge.
  • Lead and coordinate adherence to and reporting of safety & quality issues, reporting any concerns immediately.
  • Have detailed working knowledge of key partnership services and organisations (voluntary sector, social services, housing), including eligibility criteria and access procedures.
  • Lead and maintain a learning environment via mentorship, supervision and guidance to identified junior staff and students.
  • Lead on Quality Improvement and liaise with the Quality Improvement team to support areas of practice development and coordinate staff training in improvement approaches.
  • Support staff training and development in all areas appropriate to inpatient care.
  • Lead on improving patient experience and co‑production on the Ward.
  • Provide senior leadership across the acute system as deemed necessary.
