Job Summary

We are looking for a Band 5 Staff Nurse/Operating Department Practitioner to work in Tower, Nuffield and Lambeth theatres, recovery, admissions/ambulatory/discharge lounges. The post holder is responsible for assessment of perioperative care needs of patients, planning programmes of care, implementation and evaluation without direct supervision. At times they may manage the ward and supervise junior staff. The role requires working independently and promoting person‑centred care principles.

Closing date: 13 November 2025. Interview date: 21 November 2025.

Responsibilities
  • Admit surgical patients and take clear, concise histories.
  • Scrub, circulate, and assist in operating theatres.
  • Provide postoperative recovery care.
  • Play a role in an internal rotation program for skill development.
  • Co‑coordinate theatre lists and departmental duties.
  • Support Trust initiatives, quality improvement and audit.
  • Recognise and avoid risks to patient safety.
  • Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments and develop discharge plans.
  • Perform nursing procedures, treatments and maintain high standards of care.
  • Complete accurate and legible documentation and system entries.
  • Carry out prescribed physical observations (BP, temperature, respiration, blood sugars, urinalysis, weight, height) and report exceptions.
  • Administer prescribed medication, including transfusion of blood products.
  • Assist with and support other members of the multidisciplinary team throughout the patient journey.
  • Offer flexible coverage across clinical areas as required.
Person Specification
Education / Qualification (Essential)
  • Registered Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner on the NMC / HCPC register, holding the appropriate level for the specialisation area.
Desirable
  • Teaching & assessing qualification.
Previous Experience (Essential)
  • Experience working independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience in the relevant perioperative nursing area.
  • Completion of a preceptorship.
Desirable
  • Experience in other nursing fields.
  • Experience supervising junior staff.
Skills / Knowledge / Ability (Essential)
  • Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care programmes.
