Job Overview
Under the direction of the team leader, the theatre practitioner/anaesthetic/recovery nurse is accountable for organising and providing nursing care in the peri‑operative setting. They will support the Anaesthetic team to maintain excellence in peri‑operative practice, act as the link between the Anaesthetic team and other parts of the operating theatre and hospital, honour the Trust’s Core values, adhere to the NMC/HCPC code, demonstrate commitment to quality patient care through effective teamwork, and deliver high standards of care responsive to patients’ needs. The successful candidate must be flexible and able to work a variety of shifts – days, nights and weekends – as required.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care in partnership with patients, the multidisciplinary team and family/carers where appropriate
- Actively focus on health promotion with individual patients
- Effectively manage your workload delegated by a senior nurse by prioritising care appropriately
- Carry out a range of anaesthetics, recovery and obstetric clinical duties, providing a 24/7 service
- Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Experience in anaesthetics and recovery
- 1st level Registered Nurse / Operating Department Practitioner
- Basic information technology skills
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
- High level of personal motivation towards patient care and continuous professional development
- Flexibility
- Aware of responsibilities in line with data protection
Desirable Skills and Experience
- Experience of audit projects
- Practice Assessor
- Patient care expertise (as above)
- Flexible between anaesthetics and recovery duties
- Human Resources experience – practice in accordance with NMC/HCPC Code and safeguarding of patients
- Contribute to training and support for nurses, ODPs, support workers and students
- Participate in a preceptorship programme and receive regular clinical supervision
- Understand the Trust’s Clinical Governance Strategy and support colleagues within this framework
- Keep accurate records in line with NMC/HCPC guidelines for documentation
- Awareness of health and safety legislation; comply with all health and safety rules and safe systems of work
- Contribute to the Trust’s Risk Management Strategy and local operational policy
- Keep up to date with developments in peri‑operative practice
- Contribute to new ideas and projects to develop practice
- Participate in induction programmes for new staff and students
- Monitor standards of care and contribute to improvement through benchmarking, audit and research
- Act as a learning resource within the team
- Utilise resources effectively using evidence‑lined practice
- Report failures or mechanical problems of equipment in line with Medical Devices Policy
- Order stock and non‑stock items, including medicines, as per departmental needs
- Maintain high professional standards and discuss opportunities to develop clinical practice with the line manager
- Ensure infection prevention and control measures are followed and support the Clean Your Hands Campaign
- Submit to periodic reviews of control of infection policy
- Provide training and support to staff to challenge discriminatory behaviour
- Maintain good working relationships with all members of the peri‑operative team and external agencies
- Communicate effectively with ward team, senior nurses, doctors, allied health professionals, service managers, etc.
- Be aware of health and safety legislation relating to work environment and safe practices when exposed to bodily fluids, hazardous substances and sharps
- Ensure all equipment is maintained safely, functioning properly and report malfunctions
