Job description
Band 5 Specialist Dental Nurse (requires IHS)

We are seeking an enthusiastic, dynamic and forward‑thinking Specialist Dental Nurse to join the Birmingham Community Dental Nursing team. You will work in a multi‑disciplinary team carrying out a variety of dental treatments under local anaesthetic, conscious sedation and general anaesthesia.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Support the clinical management of the dental specialty and ensure delivery of a high standard of patient care while adhering to Trust policies and procedures.
  • Provide high‑quality clinical nursing support across the Dental Services Division sites, responding to complex patient needs.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and manage patients with complex dental, social and medical needs.
  • Control and rotate dental stock, ordering consumables as required.
  • Prepare and maintain specialised dental equipment and dispose of clinical waste, including bodily fluids.
  • Support recording of patient pre‑operative assessments (e.g., height, weight, blood pressure).
  • Carry out any other duties relevant to this role, as specified by the Dental Nurse Manager and/or Dental Nurse Tutor(s).
  • Provide clinical nursing support for radiography within the department to support the patient pathway.
  • Identify staff and students who require additional training within the specialty and arrange appropriate training where necessary.
  • Support the School of Dental Nursing, University of Birmingham, School of Hygiene and Therapy and relevant Heads of Service in delivering team training for all disciplines.
  • Adhere to procedures that support national compliance targets.
  • Implement agreed local Divisional and Trust policies.
  • Implement outcomes related to Clinical Governance and Quality Improvement for the specialty.

Qualifications and requirements:

  • Band 5 Specialist Dental Nurse qualification.
  • Current Dental Sedation Certificate (IHS) and up‑to‑date sedation training.
  • Copy of CPD log relating to the Sedation specialism.
  • Flexibility to travel to other sites/locations within the division as required.
  • Previous experience in a community dental nursing setting preferred.
