Job description
Overview

We are seeking an experienced Band 5 Nurse to join the Cardiac Care Unit/ Ward 16. The busy 30‑bedded Cardiology Unit comprises 10 monitored cardiac high dependency beds (Level 2) and the capacity to monitor an additional 12 patients via ambulatory telemetry. Our service includes caring for patients undergoing Coronary Angiography, Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), Permanent Pacemaker insertion and out‑of‑hours temporary pacemaker insertions. We also support patients with Arrhythmias, ACS (NSTEMI/STEMI) and Heart Failure.

Responsibilities
  • Administration of medication, including intravenous drugs.
  • Assisting patients undergoing cardiac procedures such as coronary angiography and other investigations.
  • Providing nutritional support and hygiene care.
  • Supporting practical assessment of students on placement.
  • Co‑ordinating treatment and discharge planning with the medical and multidisciplinary team.
  • Completing nursing assessment and care planning.
  • Recording clinical observations on the nerve centre and escalating as required using NEWS2 and SBAR.
  • Delivering and evaluating patient care programmes by assessing, planning, implementing and reviewing care.
  • Working closely with the department/ward manager and multidisciplinary team to maintain nursing care standards, policies and service development.
  • Performing all relevant care under supervision and, when competent, supervising junior qualified staff, unqualified staff and student nurses within a safe environment.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Current Acute Registered Nurse with the NMC.
  • Degree or Masters in a nursing‑related specialty, or working towards one.
  • Experience working in an acute hospital setting.
  • Evidence of further education, training and ongoing learning.
  • Experience in a Coronary Care Unit or related setting (desirable).
  • SLIP/Practical Assessor or teaching qualification (desirable).
Knowledge & Skills
  • Knowledge of clinical effectiveness, research and audit.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills and the ability to undertake challenging conversations.
  • Competent in the administration of intravenous medication.
  • ECG recording and interpretation.
  • Venepuncture and cannulation (desirable).
  • Familiarity with patient administration systems such as ICE, IPM, EPMA and Nervecentre.
