Job Summary

UHB Paediatrics 0‑16 years: Where a passion and career come together!

We have one vacancy for a Band 5 Paediatric Nurse within our established team at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

Applicants can be experienced nurses or newly qualified nurses with a valid pin. You will be supported to work across all paediatric areas, including Assessment units, Inpatients and High Dependency, and will receive specific training from our education team to develop confidence in your clinical practice.

Within 12 months you will progress toward a critical care qualification, dependent on your commitment and progress. The service operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week across Heartlands and Good Hope, with full‑time and part‑time posts available. Flexible working requests will be considered.

Responsibilities

The nurse will practise autonomously and be responsible for safe, compassionate person‑centred evidence‑based nursing that respects dignity and human rights. Key duties include:

  • Assessment of patient care needs and planning programmes of care.
  • Implementation of care plans and evaluation of outcomes without direct supervision.
  • Supervising junior staff or learners and providing leadership within the ward/department.
  • Promoting family‑centred care and collaborating with parents, carers and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Providing holistic, non‑judgemental care that supports social inclusion and recognises diversity.
  • Contributing to practice development and completing all required work‑based training.
Qualifications – Essential
  • Registered Child Branch Nurse on the NMC Register.
  • Evidence and ability to re‑validate as required by the NMC.
Experience – Essential
  • Previous or recent experience in an acute secondary NHS setting (including recent student placements).
  • Evidence of achievements, career development and ongoing professional development.
  • Experience of working independently and within a team, delegating and supervising others.
  • Willingness to become a practice supervisor/assessor and meet NMC standards for student supervision and assessment.
  • Knowledge of the NMC Code of Conduct and principles of safeguarding and mental capacity.
  • Awareness of health and safety issues and current NHS policy context.

  • Positive, enthusiastic, caring, approachable and articulate communication skills.
  • Punctual, reliable and able to work varied shift patterns including nights and weekends.
  • Ability to work under unsocial hours and adapt to different practice settings.
Contract & Salary
  • Band 5 – £31,049 to £37,796 per year.
  • Contract: Permanent.
  • Working pattern: Part‑time, flexible working arrangements available.
