Job summary

Jobsworth Recruitment is seeking an experienced Automation Engineer to join our manufacturing automation team in Wolverhampton. You will work on PLCs, robotics, HMI platforms and industrial control systems to develop, maintain and improve automated production lines across a modern facility.

You'll lead Siemens PLC programming, HMI design, robotics programming and commissioning, while driving continuous improvement projects and ensuring reliability and safety of automated equipment.

Qualifications

  • Proven Automation Engineer experience in manufacturing/industrial environments.
  • Siemens PLC programming, diagnostics & commissioning experience.
  • HMI development and troubleshooting skills.
  • Industrial robotics programming and fault diagnosis experience.
  • Experience with industrial automation and machine control systems.
  • Strong knowledge of VSDs, servo systems, sensors/encoders, and three-phase systems.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and engineering drawings.
  • Experience delivering continuous improvement projects.

Responsibilities

  • Programming, modifying and fault-finding Siemens PLC systems.
  • Designing, configuring and maintaining HMI interfaces.
  • Supporting robotics, including programming, diagnostics and optimisation.
  • Installing, commissioning and integrating new automated production equipment.
  • Developing automation solutions to improve manufacturing efficiency.
  • Diagnosing faults on PLCs, drives, motors and sensors.
  • Supporting CNC machinery and automated fabrication equipment.
  • Optimising machine performance to minimise downtime and boost productivity.
  • Working on automation upgrades and continuous improvement projects.
  • Maintaining backups, drawings and documentation.
  • Supporting preventative maintenance activities on automated systems.

The Role

As our Automation Engineer, you'll be responsible for ensuring the reliability, efficiency and continual improvement of our automated manufacturing systems.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Programming, modifying and fault-finding Siemens PLC systems.
  • Designing, configuring and maintaining HMI interfaces.
  • Supporting industrial robotics, including programming, diagnostics and optimisation.
  • Installing, commissioning and integrating new automated production equipment.
  • Developing automation solutions to improve manufacturing efficiency.
  • Diagnosing faults on PLCs, drives, motors, servo systems, sensors and industrial control systems.
  • Supporting CNC machinery and automated fabrication equipment.
  • Optimising machine performance to minimise downtime and increase productivity.
  • Working on automation upgrades, retrofits and continuous improvement projects.
  • Maintaining PLC backups, electrical drawings and technical documentation.
  • Supporting preventative maintenance activities on automated systems.
  • Working closely with production and engineering teams to deliver operational excellence.
  • Ensuring compliance with all electrical, machinery safety and Health & Safety regulations.
What We're Looking For

We're seeking an engineer with a strong automation background gained within manufacturing or industrial environments.

Essential Skills & Experience
  • Proven experience as an Automation Engineer, Controls Engineer or Electrical Automation Engineer.
  • Siemens PLC programming, diagnostics and commissioning.
  • HMI development and troubleshooting.
  • Industrial robotics programming and fault diagnosis.
  • Experience with industrial automation and machine control systems.
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Variable Speed Drives (VSDs)
    • Servo systems
    • Sensors and encoders
    • Three-phase electrical systems
    • Industrial control panels
  • Experience commissioning automated machinery.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and engineering drawings.
  • Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience delivering continuous improvement projects.
Desirable Experience

Experience in any of the following would be advantageous:

  • CNC machinery
  • Fabrication or metal processing
  • Aluminium manufacturing
  • Vision systems
  • Pick-and-place robotics
  • Ethernet/IP and industrial communication networks
  • SCADA systems
  • Machine retrofits and automation upgrades
  • Electrical design using AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN
  • Functional safety systems
Qualifications

Ideally you'll hold:

  • HNC/HND in Electrical, Automation or Control Engineering
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent
  • Degree in Electrical, Controls or Automation Engineering (desirable)

Additional qualifications:

  • 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS7671)
  • Inspection & Testing (advantageous)

You'll have experience working with:
