Role Purpose
To support pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) in accessing the curriculum, developing social and communication skills, and managing emotional and behavioural needs in a safe, inclusive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with autism, both in and out of the classroom
- Support pupils with communication, social interaction, and emotional regulation
- Assist the class teacher in delivering differentiated learning activities tailored to individual needs
- Implement strategies outlined in EHCPs, IEPs, and behaviour support plans
- Use visual timetables, structured routines, and sensory strategies to support learning
- Encourage independence, confidence, and positive behaviour
- Support pupils during transitions, break times, and unstructured activities
- Monitor and record progress, behaviour, and achievements, providing feedback to teachers and SENCOs
- Promote inclusion and ensure pupils are fully supported within the school environment
- Work closely with teachers, SENCOs, therapists, and parents/carers
- Follow safeguarding, health & safety, and school policies at all times
Essential Skills & Experience
- Experience working with children or young people with autism (school, care, or support setting)
- Strong understanding of ASC needs, including sensory processing and communication differences
- Calm, patient, and empathetic approach
- Ability to manage challenging behaviour using positive behaviour support strategies
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Commitment to safeguarding and inclusive education
Desirable (Not Essential)
- Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification
- SEN training (ASC, ADHD, SEMH)
- Experience with PECS, Makaton, or visual communication systems
- Team Teach or de-escalation training
