Job description

Are you passionate about helping children and young people overcome barriers to learning? Would you like to build a career supporting pupils with Autism and additional needs? This Autism Support Assistant role in Trowbridge, Wiltshire offers a fantastic opportunity to gain hands-on experience within a specialist school environment.

A specialist educational setting in Trowbridge is looking for a reliable, empathetic, and enthusiastic Autism Support Assistant to join its pupil support team. The school works with children and young people aged 5-16, providing tailored education and support for pupils with Autism, communication difficulties, sensory requirements, and other additional learning needs.

The successful candidate will become an important part of each pupil's school experience. You will work closely with teaching staff and other professionals to ensure students receive the encouragement and practical assistance they need to participate in lessons and feel comfortable within the school environment.

What Will You Be Doing?

Your role will involve providing individual and small-group support throughout the school day. Depending on the needs of each pupil, you could be helping them follow classroom activities, encouraging them to communicate, supporting interactions with their peers, or helping them manage situations that they may find difficult.

You will also encourage pupils to become more independent by helping them develop everyday skills, make choices, and take greater responsibility for their learning. A calm and consistent approach will be particularly important when supporting students who may experience sensory overload, anxiety, or difficulties with emotional regulation.

Developing a strong understanding of the pupils you work with will be an important part of the position. By building positive relationships and recognising individual communication styles and needs, you can help create an environment where pupils feel secure and are encouraged to succeed.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

This position provides far more than classroom experience. You will have the opportunity to observe and learn how specialist education teams support children with a wide range of needs while developing skills that can be applied to many future careers.

You could gain experience in:

  • Supporting children and young people with Autism and additional needs.
  • Adapting activities to suit different learning and communication styles.
  • Encouraging confidence, independence, and social development.
  • Understanding sensory needs and individual support strategies.
  • Promoting positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing.
  • Working effectively as part of a multidisciplinary education team.
  • Building professional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Pay of £85-£110 per day.
Who Is This Role Suitable For?

This opportunity could be an excellent starting point for graduates, career changers, and aspiring education or care professionals who want to gain relevant experience before progressing into a specialist career.

The experience gained could be particularly useful for those considering future pathways in Psychology, Educational Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Teaching, Counselling, or Special Educational Needs.

You do not need to know everything about Autism from day one. A willingness to learn, a patient nature, and a genuine commitment to helping young people are key qualities for the role. You will have the opportunity to learn from experienced staff and develop your understanding through practical experience.

Make a Difference in Trowbridge

Working as an Autism Support Assistant can be incredibly rewarding. Small achievements can represent significant progress for a pupil, whether that means joining an activity, communicating a need, managing a challenging situation, or becoming more independent.

If you are looking for a role where you can develop professionally while having a positive impact on young people's lives, this Autism Support Assistant position in Trowbridge, Wiltshire could be an excellent next step.

Salary will be determined by the successful candidate's qualifications and relevant experience, and will be in accordance with the client's pay policy.
